In the last week, Mr. Michael McLaughlin, Head of Middle School, sent newly enrolled and returning families information regarding special activities and important dates for the summer.  Upper School students will receive similar information very soon. In the meantime, we would like to share with you the Middle School summer reading book. Our shared Middle School novel is Out of My Heart by Sharon M. Draper, which is the sequel to last year's summer read, Out of My Mind. Enjoy the summer reading!

Students Place in AMC 8 Math Competition

Austin Prep eighth grade students all participated in the Mathematical Association of America AMC 8 competition this year. This test covers a wide variety of content up to the beginning of Algebra I and helps students strengthen their analytical skills. Pictured above, left to right, is Elena Klimashova '26 (1st Place), Cecilia Goldsmith '26 (2nd Place), and Sydney Danese '26 and Madeleine Fisher '26 (tied for 3rd Place). Great job by all and a special congratulations to these students for their remarkable achievement.

Join the Choir for Rome Pilgrimage

As was noted in a recent letter from Head of School, James Hickey, Ph.D., Austin Prep’s Choir has been invited to return to Vatican City to attend an audience with Pope Francis and headline several performances in the Eternal City. The choir visited Rome during the Christmas season in 2019, which was the School's last trip abroad before the Covid-19 pandemic. Some highlights of the trip include singing during mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Basilica of St. Francis (in Assisi), and in the Basilica of St. Augustine where the relics of his mother, St. Monica, are held. The tour also includes taking in the grandeur of Rome and visiting major pilgrimage sites.

School-sponsored travel abroad opportunities are ordinarily reserved exclusively for students, but given the unique nature of this occasion, Austin Prep, in the spirit of unitas, is extending an opportunity to all current students and their family members – parents, grandparents, and siblings – to travel on this pilgrimage. This trip will be the only international offering in the 2022-2023 school year, and the earliest that Austin Prep may once again have this opportunity in Vatican City is December 2024.

If there are students thinking about joining the Austin Prep Choir, now seems as good a time as ever. If students weren’t thinking about it, they might consider it now. The dates of Austin Prep’s nine-day Christmas season Pilgrimage and Choir Performance Tour are December 28, 2022 to January 5, 2023. Registration and a deposit are due in the Academic Office by June 20.

Father Patrick Armano, School Chaplain, will serve as our chaplain for the trip. For complete details about the itinerary, please click here. Please be in touch with Michael McLaughlin, Head of Middle School, with any questions at mmclaughlin@austinprep.org. Brochures are available in the Head’s Office and the Academic Office.

Have a Great Summer!

We made it! With Cohorts and Reopening Plans in our rearview, the focus for the 2021-2022 Academic Year was on a return to normalcy and the traditions of Austin Prep. But in true Austin Prep fashion, normal just isn't enough. We are on a journey towards the exceptional. Convocation Mass didn't just return to an in person event for the entire school community; we welcomed Cardinal Seán, commissioned the Daughters of Mary, and marched to a parade of flags. Instead of transitioning from livestreamed to in person editions of our December traditions, we took The Nutcracker and Lessons and Carols on the road to Stoneham's Greater Boston Stage Company. Oh, we also won the MIAA Division I State Championship in Girls Ice Hockey. Through it all, we lived out the theme for the academic year: "Love one another as I have loved you."

This is the final weekly edition of the Cougar Courier for the academic year, but a special 2021-2022 Year in Review Edition of the Cougar Courier will be arriving in your inboxes in the coming weeks. Thank you for reading, and we will see you in the Fall!
