Model UN Newsletter Summarizes Weekend Experience
In January, the Austin Prep Model United Nations team participated in the 69th session of Harvard's Model United Nations. Our students were joined by over 2,000 high school delegates and their faculty advisors with a staff of over 230 Harvard University undergraduates to learn about diplomacy, to connect with friends from around the world, and to offer solutions to some of the most pressing issues faced by our world today. Now, perhaps more than ever, the value of Model United Nations has never been clearer.
Model UN advisor Mr. Jon Whalen recently put together this great e-newsletter summarizing the events of that weekend. You can learn more about the Model UN experience here.
Continue to Monitor for COVID Symptoms Daily
The daily COVID checklist email below hit your inbox for the final time yesterday.
As we continue to emerge from the pandemic in a direction that seems to be more normal, Austin Prep will no longer be sending out the daily COVID-19 Symptoms Checklist. That said, the Health Office encourages individual families to continue to self monitor for symptoms included on the Checklist.
As a reminder, mask wearing is optional and a personal choice, irrespective of vaccination status. In alignment with mission, Austin Prep has a strong expectation that each individual's personal choice will be fully respected. Masks will remain a requirement of anyone entering or spending time in the Health Office.
Vaccination is highly encouraged and remains one of the most important ways to prevent COVID-19.
Please direct any questions or concerns you may have to School Nurses Kim Esakof or Diana Carlson in the Health Office at extensions 816 or 584.
Community Spotlight: Ms. Aprille Hibbard
Note: Our vibrant campus comes to life as a result of the talented students and faculty who make up the Austin Prep community. We look forward to periodically highlighting those individuals here in the Cougar Courier.
Hometown: Exeter, NH
Education/Degrees: Bachelor of Science from St. Joseph’s College in Maine and a Masters of Science from Michigan Technological University
Years at Austin Prep: 1st year
Years working in Education: 3rd year
Department/Area of Subject: Middle School Science Faculty
Describe a teacher who inspired you growing up: My high school Anatomy teacher Ms. Glaser really inspired me growing up. She was always so passionate about the subject she was teaching and that always made lessons more captivating and fun. She is the reason I went to college to study Biology, because she had a way of making science come to life. I do not remember most of my high school lessons, but because I could tell that she was excited to be there and teach, it made her lessons more memorable.
Do you have a motto you teach by? Or an expression you try to instill in your classroom?: I try to make each class fun. I love finding horrible music parodies that have to do with topics in class. A personal favorite is “Fossil Rock Anthem”. Science can be fun and it is ever changing. There is so much we have yet to learn!
If you weren’t a teacher, what career would you have?: Growing up I really wanted to be a doctor, specifically an OBGYN.
Favorite Quote: “Bright young women, sick of swimming, ready to stand” - Ariel
Fun fact (about you or your past; something colleagues & students might not ordinarily know): I served in Moldova with the Peace Corps as a Health Teacher. Before being assigned the village I would teach at, I had 10 weeks of training, where I learned a completely new language! I am now fluent in Romanian.

Girls Ice Hockey Captures MIAA Division I State Title
With Sunday's MIAA Division I State Championship victory over Arlington, the Girls Ice Hockey team finished the 2021-2022 season 27-0-0.
The Austin Prep Girls Ice Hockey team captured the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division 1 State Championship with a 4-1 victory over Arlington High School on Sunday, March 20 at TD Garden. The win capped a historic season for the Cougars, finishing a perfect 27-0-0. Additionally, it marked the program's third state title, adding to the 2016 championship and the 2020 co-championship which was awarded to the team after the state final was halted as a result of the emerging Covid-19 pandemic.
With goals by Bree Anderson '25, Kathryn Karo '22, McKenzie Cerrato '23, and Isabel Hulse '22, and with 17 saves from Lauryn Hanafin '22, the title game was a display of Austin Prep's dominance this season, in which the Cougars outscored opponents by a staggering 145 goals, 156-11.
“Essentially this group has cemented themselves as the most successful sports team in the history of Austin Prep athletics. We knew the potential was there, but I didn’t know if we knew just how vast that greatness could be. It’s also very hard to be at A+ every single game. There have been games we’ve really had to grind through and dig deep. It’s an incredible accomplishment for this team, but easier said than done. And to go 27-0-0, that’s a rarity in any sport. Any gender. Any level, " Head Coach Stephanie Wood said.
In winning the 2022 state title, the Girls Ice Hockey program will be departing the MIAA on top. The team will join all of Austin Prep's athletic programs in the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) for the 2022-23 school year.

2022 St. Augustine Lecturer Announced
Fr. Bill Gabriel, O.S.A. will address the school community on Tuesday
Austin Prep recently announced that Fr. Bill Gabriel, O.S.A. will serve as the speaker for this year's St. Augustine Lecture Series. This year's lecture will take place Tuesday, March 29th at 8:30 a.m. in Richard J. Meelia Hall. The event will feature a question and answer segment for Austin Prep students. The remarks of St. Augustine Lecturers typically support the school's theme for the academic year. The basis for Fr. Gabriel's lecture will be this year's school theme. "Love one another as I have loved you".
Born and raised a Roman Catholic in New Hampshire, Fr. Bill felt a calling to religious life at the young age of eight, particularly inspired by an Augustinian Friar from Merrimack College who served as a pastor at Fr. Bill's local parish. Fr. Bill entered Villanova University in 2010, graduating in 2014 with an undergraduate degree in Theology. After graduation, Fr. Bill taught high school Theology and coached basketball in Delaware. After much contemplation and study, Fr. Bill joined the Order of St. Augustine in 2015 through the formation process. On June 26, 2021, Fr. Bill was ordained an Augustinian priest, and he accepted his first assignment as the Parochial Vicar, commonly referred to as the Associate Pastor, for the St. Thomas of Villanova Parish, becoming one of the youngest Augustinians at the University. His ministry experience and interests include: Augustine and the Augustinian charism, secondary education, retreats, campus ministry, faith formation, as well as sports and spirituality.
About the St. Augustine Lecture Series
The St. Augustine Lecture Series began in 2015 and is designed to enrich the intellectual life of the school community by exposing students to accomplished individuals who share their experiences and lessons learned in life. Previous speakers include:

- Major General Charles W. Whittington, Jr., the Deputy Commanding General of Operations in the U.S. First Army.
- Dr. Steven DiSalvo, current President of Endicott College and Austin Prep Trustee.
- Grace Cotter Regan, the first female president of Boston College High School.
- Rev. Raymond F. Dlugos, OSB, an Austin Prep Trustee and Merrimack College’s Vice President of Mission and Ministry.
- Dr. Crystal Kuykendall, a recognized educator, attorney, author and motivational speaker who has continued to work with Austin Prep in our journey to continue the progress in building a diverse and inclusive educational environment, in support of our Augustinian values of veritas, unitas, and caritas.
- Fr. Bryan Hehir, the Parker Gilbert Montgomery Professor of the Practice of Religion and Public Life at the Harvard Kennedy School, who is also the Secretary of Health and Social Services on the staff of Cardinal Sean O’Malley in the Archdiocese of Boston.

Reflect on Austin Prep's 1992 Co-Ed Transition in Journey of the Heart
Ms. Celia Barletta (center), with fellow Lumen Award recipients Ms. Marla Pascucci-Byrne '26 and Mrs. Stephanie Choate.
We are pleased to provide you with the next edition of Journey of the Heart, our highlight of programs, activities, and initiatives at Austin Prep that exemplify our core values. Journey of the Heart is published on our website, where members of the faculty and staff will share their insights. Archived installments are available on our website, as well.
Ms. Celia Barletta started her Austin Prep Journey in 1985. Now in her 37th year of service, Ms. Barletta has served as a faculty member in the World Language Department (and currently Chair), Dean of Student Activities, Assistant Head for Academic Affairs, and was the 2020 Lumen Award recipient for teaching excellence. She was able to witness first hand Austin Prep's transition to a co-educational school in 1992. In this edition of Journey of the Heart, and as we celebrate Women's History Month, Ms. Barletta reflects on that experience, and specifically recalls working with the first group of admitted women students as they demonstrated our core values in action.
Marine Science Class Visits Parker River Wildlife Refuge
On Tuesday, Ms. Anjali Bhardwaj's honors marine science class went to Parker River Wildlife Refuge to explore a pristine estuary habitat that is comprised of beaches, dunes, forests, freshwater marsh, and 3,000+ acres of salt marsh. Before the trip, students in the class completed a lab using long-term data collected by scientists at Plum Island to investigate the rate of marsh soil elevation rise to see if different species of saltmarsh cordgrass and saltmarsh hay grass are keeping up with sea-level rise and if marsh elevation is rising in the same way where both types of vegetation live. The most obvious long-term threat to this incredible habitat is sea-level rise, which was a major focus of oceanography class the previous semester and was the basis of the class' current estuary lab. Students were able to explore the ecosystem they have spent a large amount of time studying and to see the area in their home state that could potentially be lost to many of the threats focused on in class. It was a great trip and a highlight was spotting a snowy owl in the dunes almost immediately after arriving at Parker River.
Austin Prep Prays for Peace
Consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Yesterday, the Austin Prep Community joined together with Pope Francis and the bishops and priests from throughout the world in praying for peace. Pope Francis asked the bishops of the world and their priests to join him as he Consecrates Russia, Ukraine, and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Holy Father offered the prayer of consecration at 5:00 p.m. Rome time. In the Chapel of St. Augustine, Austin Prep had Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 12:00 p.m. followed by the Prayer of Consecration in union with the Pope and finally Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
Austin Prep Supports Ukraine Relief Efforts Through Charitable Drive
We have witnessed the effects of the war in Ukraine, and have seen the devastation that it has brought upon its people. Millions of victims have fled their homes to find refuge in foreign nations. They are displaced, and when the time comes that they can return, they will return to the ruins of their homes, schools, hospitals, churches, and places of work.
Our faith calls us to act in solidarity, to understand that we are brothers and sisters in Christ and to actively work for the good and care of others. In the spirit of veritas, unitas, and caritas, Austin Prep families contributed over $1,700 to support Ukraine and its people. Donations will be collected through early next week so please consider making a contribution. We look forward to making this collective donation to the Sovereign Order of Malta, who is providing direct relief services in Ukraine and for Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries.
We are grateful for the generosity of our Austin Prep families, and ask friends and family of Austin Prep to join us in praying for a peaceful end to the war.
Staff Cultivated During Professional Development Day
Austin Prep faculty and staff had the opportunity to learn a few 8-counts of choreography in a workshop session led by Ms. Marla Pascucci Byrne P’26.
On Monday, faculty and staff took part in a mini Professional Development Conference at Austin Prep. The day began with a Lenten Retreat organized through the Chaplain and the Office of Mission and Inclusion. Teachers attended Mass, enjoyed breakfast, and participated in a Lenten prayerful practice like the Rosary or singing hymns with Mr. Stephen Williams, Music Faculty. The second half of the day included three breakout sessions with 18 concurrent workshop sessions covering a range of topics and facilitated by members of the faculty. Highlights included teaching practices on student engagement, gamification, and technology, opportunities to sit in the seats of students with lessons on the war in Ukraine or an Environmental Science lab, and sessions geared towards promoting community connections like a guided painting lesson, dance, and a cooking class. The day also included keynotes from Mr. Brian Russo '09 on his Summer Sabbatical and a panel celebrating Women's History Month with the most recent recipients of Austin Prep's Lumen Award. The Mini Conference Day was an initiative proposed in Austin Prep's Strategic Planning efforts and represented an investment in continuing to cultivate the professional staff.
Spring Sports Begin
The formidable long stick defensive unit of the boys lacrosse team is ready for the spring season.
It was a quick turnaround for Austin Prep Athletics as just about 12 hours after the Girls Ice Hockey Team left the TD Garden ice with a state title in hand, the spring sports season officially started. We are grateful for all those who helped make that happen! For the latest athletics schedule and game updates check out the Athletic Department's Twitter and Instagram account. Good luck spring student-athletes!
