All Saints' Day Masses Begin Remembrance Month
The remembrance month of November began Monday with the celebration of All Saints' Day Mass from Richard J. Meelia '67 Hall. Two separate Masses were held for Middle and Upper School students. Father Patrick Armano, School Chaplain, encouraged those in attendance to remember the saints of the church, and all those who have reached heaven.
"Saints are those who have emptied themselves to allow themselves to be filled with God, but there are many people in heaven, and those are who we celebrate today. Our goal is to be in heaven, and to be prepared for the next life. And that is what we are doing here at Austin Prep right now," Father Patrick said.
On Tuesday, All Souls' Day, Austin Prep invited all those within the School community to submit the names of deceased loved ones, which will be placed at the foot of the altar in the Chapel of St. Augustine to be remembered in our masses, prayers, and sacrifices, as an expression of our faith and in gratitude for being part of the Austin Prep community. If you would like to submit the name of a deceased loved one, you can do so by clicking here. Our faith assures us that the bonds of love that we have shared with them do not end with death.

Peace and Justice Liturgies to be Celebrated November 15th
"We love the truth when its light shines warmly upon us but when it exposes our darkness we rebuke it. If we are consecrated to the Truth Himself, Christ the Lord, then His Light shall radiate so deeply within us that there will be no more darkness.”
~ St. Augustine
Father Jorge Reyes, O.S.A. celebrated a peace and justice liturgy in March, 2021.
As an Augustinian Catholic community, we believe that every act of racism and violence is a failure to acknowledge and respect that we are created in God’s image and that every human person has worth and dignity. Our school community will celebrate two liturgies for Peace and Justice on Monday, November 15th in the Chapel of St. Augustine. Theology classes meeting during the time of the liturgies will be in attendance. More details will be sent to participating students and families next week.

Dr. Kuykendall Makes First Visit of 2021-2022 Academic Year
Dr. Crystal Kuykendall with Upper School Students at a presentation this week.
Dr. Crystal Kuykendall visited campus for the first time this academic year on Tuesday, November 2nd and Wednesday, November 3rd, and addressed our students on the importance of creating a sense of belonging for all students, developing personal responsibility, and being role models. She focused on these topics through the lens of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas.
Dr. Kuykendall first came to campus in March 2020 at the invitation of the Head of School to be the keynote speaker at the 2020 St. Augustine Lecture. She joined our team in the summer of 2020 to be our partner to advance our ongoing work to educate for justice, and we are grateful that our new students had the opportunity to attend her lectures this week with classmates.

Morning prayer has been enriched by the Our Father and Hail Mary, en français, and Sage Dining featured a French menu on Thursday.
Christian Alfieri '22 prays the Hail Mary in French.
National French Week continues into next week. On Monday, the French Club will build Eiffel Towers out of marshmallows and dried spaghetti. Students in the upper levels will also go into some of the Middle School Latin classes to teach a mini lesson in French. It will conclude on Tuesday, November 9th. Students in all grades have the opportunity to win prizes by filling in the BINGO cards handed out at lunch, or going to Room 205 to collect data for the Francophone trivia contest. Bonne chance!
Austin Prep Student Travel Program Highlighted
In a typical year, Austin Prep makes a number of domestic and international trips available for students. Students in Grades 6-12 have had the opportunity to enrich their journeys through global travel. Recent international destinations have included: Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Greece, Ecuador, Italy, New Zealand, Panama, Peru, the United Kingdom, and perhaps most notably, a Christmas trip to Vatican City.
The winter 2019-2020 Choral trip to Rome was not only a landmark experience for Austin Prep students, it was the last trip students took prior to the then emerging COVID-19 pandemic. As most aspects of the educational experience have returned to a new sense of normal, student travel has been slow to return.
That said, industry experts and educators are looking forward to the future of student travel. Austin Prep's travel programs were featured in a recent article detailing the outlook for student travel this year and beyond. Click here to read the article. We look forward to traveling with our students soon!
More Travel! Russo Takes Summer Sabbatical to Yellowstone
Every year, Austin Prep grants summer sabbatical awards to select faculty members to promote their growth as practitioners in the classroom and leaders in their fields to sustain best teaching practices. Humanities faculty Mr. Brian Russo '09 was the recipient of a summer sabbatical grant this past summer, and visited Yellowstone in August. Mr. Russo was drawn to visit Yellowstone because it is one of the largest areas of preserved wilderness in the United States. The park provides a timeless snapshot of what life was like for millions of years before humans dominated the environment.
Visiting Yellowstone provided a great opportunity for Mr. Russo to share what he has learned about one of our greatest national treasures with Austin Prep students. Mr. Russo has integrated his experience into his teaching curriculum by not only educating his students on Yellowstone’s role as the first national park, but also on how Yellowstone inspired countries around the world to create protected parks of their own. Yellowstone serves as an encouraging reminder to Austin Prep students that nature must be preserved for humanity to thrive.
Some of Mr. Russo’s favorite experiences were seeing the eruption of the Old Faithful Geyser, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and the rainbow coloration of Grand Prismatic Spring. He was also captivated by the bison which ruled the road in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley. Mr. Russo was also able to visit the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center where he saw grizzlies and timber wolves up close.
Faculty experiences like this are made possible by your support through the Annual Fund. The faculty and students of Austin Prep appreciate your continued generosity.

Peace and Justice Liturgies to be Celebrated November 15th
Father Jorge Reyes, O.S.A. celebrated a Peace and Justice Liturgy for students and staff in March, 2021.
Fr. Jorge Reyes, O.S.A., Director of Mission and Inclusion, will celebrate two Peace and Justice Liturgies on Monday, November 15th in the Chapel of St. Augustine. These Liturgies will occur during G and B Blocks and will be attended by students in Theology classes. Those students, teachers and staff members who have free blocks at that time are welcome to attend and join in prayer.
Our prayers during special Masses dedicated to justice, peace and healing, are one of several initiatives facilitated by the Office of Mission and Inclusion to foster supportive spaces for our community to gather, reflect, and pray in response to painful injustices that occur in our country and around the world.
As St. Augustine taught, we grow most when we participate in community and extend care to those who are in need through the works of Christian charity. The United Conference of Catholic Bishops affirms this approach and calls upon us to address the systemic/root causes that led to those needs.
At a time when division, social unrest, and the breakdown of community occurs in so many neighborhoods, we must embrace the heart of the Augustinian way of life. Let us work towards a mutual sharing of what God has given us so that the needs of every member of the community are met and all people are treated with the inherent dignity they deserve.
Blue Mass is November 22nd
Father Patrick Armano blesses First Responders at the 2018 Blue Mass.
The 5th Annual Blue Mass of Thanksgiving for First Responders will take place Monday, November 22nd at 8:30 a.m. in Richard J. Meelia '67 Hall. The Blue Mass has become an Austin Prep tradition and one of the most cherished days of the academic year. Parents who are First Responders are invited to join us for Mass and for Breakfast immediately following Mass. Alumni who are First Responders are also invited to the Mass and Breakfast. First Responders are asked to wear their uniforms to Mass and breakfast. Chapel dress is required of all students. Thanksgiving Basket Initiative Supports Communities in Need
Victoria Tenreiro '25 and Kate Beckel '23 assist with the delivery of baskets last Thanksgiving.
To further support our mission, Austin Prep students and staff will be assembling and donating 60 Thanksgiving Baskets for families in need. This year baskets will be donated to families from St. Mary the Assumption Parish in Lawrence. This gesture reminds us to be thankful for all that we have while also remembering and helping those less fortunate.
Over the next week Advisory Groups will partner together and collect items to include in our Thanksgiving Baskets. Below are the items that will be included in each of the 60 baskets:
Base your donations on a family size of four or five. All items should be non-perishable items. We thank you for your participation in helping make Thanksgiving a wonderful experience for these families, and look forward to our continued support of these families over Christmas and Easter.
Service Hours Soon to be Managed Through New App
Austin Prep's mission emphasizes the importance of lives of service to others in the spirit of Jesus Christ. We are in the process of switching to a new online service tracking program that helps students keep track of completed service hours right on their phones with an app called MobileServe. As this new process rolls out, students will receive an email to their Austin Prep account with directions on how to set up MobileServe. Students will go over MobileServe in advisory, but can also see Mr. Dustin Batista, Theology Faculty and Coordinator of Service, with any questions.
As a reminder, the commitment of service to others is a graduation requirement for all Austin Prep Upper School students. Students must complete 10 hours of service each year that they are enrolled in the Upper School for a total of 40 hours by the end of their senior year to be eligible for graduation. Middle School students should complete 2 hours of service in Grade 6, 3 hours of service in Grade 7, and 4 hours of service in Grade 8.
These hours must follow the criteria of Christian Service, typically represented through serving the needy as described in Matthew 25, from which we find the seven Corporal Works of Mercy. The service experience can lead to self-discovery and self-growth. These hour requirements are to be in direct service, where students are engaged in meeting and serving those who are in need. As Jesus said, “Whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me” (Matthew 25:40).
Mr. Batista is available to help students identify, and find meaningful Christian Service opportunities and create relationships with the many organizations in need of our assistance.

Initial Response to Annual Fund Campaign Strong
Faculty and Staff lead the way!
Trips to the Charlestown Navy Yard at the USS Constitution Museum, where 8th graders had the opportunity to meet Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, are made possible in part as a result of gifts to the Austin Prep Fund.
In this month of Thanksgiving, we deeply appreciate all of you who have already made a gift to the Austin Prep Fund. The money annually raised for this essential campaign makes an Austin Prep education exceptional. Along with providing resources for expanded academic activities, gifts to the Austin Prep Fund provide resources that support the arts, athletics, clubs and other activities that give students important opportunities to improve their skills and discover new interests.
As we approach the holiday season, we ask you to make Austin Prep a charitable priority in your year-end-giving plans by contributing to the Austin Prep Annual Fund. Your gift can be directed to Academics, Athletics, Mission and Inclusion, Student Life and Arts, Tuition Assistance or Austin Support (goes to the area of greatest need).
In addition to all the gifts we have received this fall from alumni, parents, past parent and grandparents, this past week the faculty and staff were asked to support the annual campaign for the Austin Prep Fund. They know Austin Prep derives its strength from all of us giving what we can, and like every year, their participation has been fantastic. We invite you to join them in supporting and endorsing Austin Prep through your generous donation.

Happening in the Classroom...
Mr. Tony Biscardi's '88 AP European History class experienced the return of the Enlightenment Salon. Students each represented a person from either the Scientific Revolution or the Enlightenment and debated ideas. Some even dressed as their assigned persona.
Students in Ms. Anjali Bhardwaj's Oceanography Lab created seawater in the lab with the same salinity that would be found in the ocean. The purpose of this lab was to demonstrate how the ocean is a solution that is not homogenous; there are different layers with different temperatures and salinity. Students looked at how temperature and salinity impact the density of salt water and create layers in our ocean. Students saw that salt water with a higher salinity will sink, and when salinities are equal, warmer water will rise and colder water will sink. These layers help create currents, which is the next topic of instruction.
Students in Señora Linda Filadoro’s P'22, '23 Spanish 2 Honors class each scored a perfecto 100% on their chapter vocabulary quiz. Students are learning about traveling abroad, modes of transportation and shopping for clothing.
Juniors in Mrs. Natalie Petrillo's P'10 Algebra 3 / Trigonometry class used concepts learned in class to build and fly a kite. From ancient China to modern times, geometric arrangements of fabric and rods have helped people rescue sailors, vanquish enemies, predict the weather, invent the airplane, study wind power, and entertain themselves with displays of aerodynamic artistry. In this project students were tasked with turning a sheet of material into a fully functioning kite. Students considered weight and area exposed to wind when they designed their kites. Final requirement for grading? The kite had to fly!
Austin Prep Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Austin Prep is committed to supporting and embracing Native American Tribes and people, while preserving their sacred heritage, culture, and beliefs for future generations. Want to learn more about some notable individuals of Native American heritage? Come check out the display board outside of the Chapel of St. Augustine.
