Austin Prep Celebrates Convocation Mass and Parade of Flags
His Eminence Seán Cardinal O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, commissions the Daughters of Mary
On Friday, Austin Prep marked the official start of the academic year with the celebration of Convocation Mass. Austin Prep welcomed His Eminence Seán Cardinal O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, as the principal celebrant and homilist. The celebration, open to parents and livestreamed to the school community, was highlighted by Cardinal Seán's commissioning of the Daughters of Mary as they begin their time as members of the School community.
Complete with the pageantry expected of Convocation – including the procession of students carrying class banners, welcomed by faculty in academic regalia to the sounds of bagpipers – this year included a parade of flags representing the national heritages of those in our school community. Over 60 national flags were included.
Head of School, Dr. James Hickey P'22, '23, '24 '27, welcomed parents, trustees, friends of the Bannabikira Sisters, Cardinal Seán, clergy, members of the Order of Malta, and Augustinian Friars to the celebration. Dr. Hickey made note of the attendance of Fr. Art Johnson, O.S.A., who was instrumental in opening Austin Prep's doors in 1963.
“The theme for the 2021-2022 academic year is the commandment of Jesus from the gospel of St. John. ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’" Dr. Hickey said. "As I reflected upon that, it occurred to me that the decision of the Bannabikira Sisters to come to Austin Prep, a new place, a new community, a new country, 7,000 miles from home is an act of unconditional love, similar to the love that mothers have for their children."
"The arrival of the Bannabikira Sisters is a blessing and opportunity to deepen Austin Prep’s connection to a global world, to broaden our horizons and perspectives about culture, race and the lived experiences of others, and to advance the work we do to spread the Kingdom of God in partnership with the joyful women in the Daughters of Mary.”
Cardinal Seán in his homily continued to reflect on Austin Prep's 2021-2022 theme from St. John's Gospel and told a story of St. John: "St. John would celebrate the eucharist for his community and would give practically the same sermon every week. Finally someone got up enough courage to ask, 'John, why do you continue to give us the same sermon?'"
"I teach love one another, because Jesus, when he was with us on the Earth, he repeated it over and over again. That is what brings meaning to our lives," St. John responded.
"Real success is being able to love, being able to make a gift of our lives to God and to others." Cardinal Seán stated.
Cardinal Seán officially commissioned Sister Paskazia Nakitende and Sister Mary Namutebi as members of the Austin Prep community, with other Daughters of Mary watching on.
After the homily, Cardinal Seán officially commissioned Sister Paskazia Nakitende and Sister Mary Namutebi as members of the Austin Prep community: "Grant we pray, that these sisters that you have chosen for this special calling, may by their way of life shown to the Church and the world a clear sign of Your Kingdom," Cardinal Seán said.
To mark the occasion, School-Wide Student Government Officers Patricia Bibeau ’22 and Jack Caruso '22 presented the Class of 2022 banner, which will eventually be hoisted to the rafters of Meelia Hall, where it will remain until being lowered at Baccalaureate Mass in May, 2022.

Hispanic Heritage Month in Full Force
Austin Prep continues to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th. During this time, we are recognizing the contributions, achievements and influence of Hispanic Americans on the history and culture of the United States. This month is significant as it includes the date of independence for many Hispanic countries.
Freshmen in Mrs. Nicole Putney's P'26, '28 Coming of Age classes are reading Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street. Students are reading the novel and other short stories about coming of age traditions in the Hispanic community, after which they will write a series of vignettes about their own culture's rites of passage at the conclusion of this unit.
Students in Mrs. Marla Pascucci-Byrne's P'26 Dance: Production and Performance took a break from their annual Thriller preparations to learn a Spanish variation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Students in Mrs. Jessica Swindell's Freshmen Foundations course recognized Hispanic Heritage Month by researching people, places, and festivals that reflect the blended culture of Latin America. As the students learn about the effects of the Columbian Exchange, the assignment challenged them to recognize the indigenous and European influences in festivals such as Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe and Dia de Los Muertos. Students added their finished projects to the Hispanic Heritage Month display outside of the Office of Mission and Inclusion.
Students have had the opportunity to indulge in different Spanish cuisine at lunch in the dining hall. Last week, students enjoyed cuisine from Cuba, and this week included dishes from Mexico.

“My time at the Hilltop is something I’ll always cherish because of the people,” explained Kiley. “From the campus ministry service & solidarity trips to the service-learning opportunities with the Meelia Center, those experiences taught me servant leadership – principles I try to take with my career now. My time at Saint Anselm College is something I have to thank for that.”

Mask Wearing Requirements Extended
As was noted in our Reopening Plan for the 2021-2022 academic year, Austin Prep identified October 1st as an approximate date to adjust the plan as needed. Earlier this week, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston extended the universal mask-wearing requirement through November 1, 2021 for Catholic schools. Austin Prep will use that date as the next opportunity to reevaluate the policy as well. For additional details regarding mask requirements at Austin Prep, please review our Reopening Plan.
The Cardinal continues to urge vaccination as the most effective way to contain the pandemic. If your child has been vaccinated, please send a copy of his/her immunization record to the Austin Prep Health Office at health.office@austinprep.org. As a reminder, per Austin Prep’s procedures and public health requirements, close contacts who are unvaccinated are required to quarantine. Vaccinated individuals are not required to quarantine as long as they remain symptom free.
Thank you for your support as we continue to work together as a school community to help keep one another safe and healthy.

Hispanic Heritage Month Continues Through Friday
Austin Prep continues to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th. During this time, we are recognizing the contributions, achievements and influence of Hispanic Americans on the history and culture of the United States. This month is significant as it includes the date of independence for many Hispanic countries.

They shared a quote to remember, a thrilling event he or she endured, his or her success story, his or her date of birth, birth place and any other important facts the students learned about the person.

Math in the Marketplace
Grade 6 Math students are applying lessons on decimals in a pretty "sweet" way. Mrs. Natalie Petrillo P'10, Math Faculty, designed a candy store simulation for students. The store included some sweet treats of varying values. Students ciphered problems as they "spent" pretend dollars at the Candy Shoppe. As a reward, students got to enjoy their "purchases." Students are currently finishing up their Math Marketplace culminating project which has challenged them to apply particular math functions to shopping!
Sage Dining Returns to Providing Full Dining Menu
The full beverage station, including the return of chocolate milk, has been available to students this year.
The 2021-2022 academic year has been a return to normal in many ways around campus. One such area is the dining experience. As was the case in previous years, Sage Dining is now able to once again provide a full salad bar and deli station, full beverage bar, and more menu options, including the return of the Seasons Station, which is a daily theme based meal. Both lunch and the community of the dining hall adds to the overall Austin Prep experience and we are grateful for Sage Dining and the meals they provide.
As with many supply based industries, Sage Dining has occasionally faced challenges in obtaining food goods for the day. As a result, menu changes might occur on a daily basis. Continue to check the Touch of Sage app as Mr. Todd Moriarty, Sage Dining Director of Dining Services and his staff will keep the daily menu updated with any changes as they occur. We appreciate your patience!

Please lend Mrs. Barletta and Mrs. Smith a hand and come retrieve any lost items that may have been returned to the Main Office. Students should check the lost and found as soon as they realize something is missing. Unclaimed items will only be held for one month. Thank you!

Eighth Grade Walks in the Footsteps of History
In Civics, eighth-grade students have been learning about the American Revolution and the importance of local historical sites. On Wednesday, students and faculty traveled off campus for two immersive history experiences.
One group visited Minuteman National Park in Lexington. Students were guided along Battle Road by Mr. Jack Brady, History and English faculty. Mr. Brady regaled students in the story of Paul Revere's capture by British soldiers and the end to the famous "midnight ride." As students traversed the route from Lexington to Lincoln, they considered architecture as a primary source and visualized the events that took place in April 1775. A highlight of the trip was an interactive demonstration at the site of Hartwell Tavern. Here, students heard from costumed historical interpreters about life in colonial Massachusetts and witnessed a musket demonstration.
The second group spent the day in the Charlestown Navy Yard at the USS Constitution Museum with Civics teacher Ms. Kristen Donnelly. October 13th was the 246th birthday of the US Navy, and Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro was in Boston for the festivities. Students arrived at the Navy Yard to the sound of a 21-gun salute and later had the opportunity to speak with Secretary Del Toro and ask him questions. Students boarded the World War II Destroyer the USS Cassian Young and interacted with rangers who talked about the history of the ship. At the Museum, students explored exhibits and engaged in various activities about the life of a sailor on the USS Constitution with Museum educators.
Students returned to campus ready to share their different experiences with classmates and make further connections between their time off campus and lessons in class.
Sixth and Seventh Grade Leadership Retreat
Mr. Jaycob Morales meets with his group of sixth and seventh graders on Wednesday.
Sixth and Seventh Grade students participated in a Leadership Summit on campus on Wednesday morning. Students began the morning by gathering into small groups and meeting their faculty facilitators. Several students volunteered to "face off" in the Cougar Categories Challenge before heading to the Stadium Complex for a morning of structured activities. In one, group members needed to guide a blindfolded student in assembling a puzzle. In another, students had to relay information about a block structure to a construction crew tasked with replicating the building. After the activities, faculty facilitated discussion about the importance of teamwork, communication, challenges, and perspectives. A bagel breakfast and recreation time at the Lower Fields and Tennis Complex were highlights of the morning. The Summit concluded with writing letters to retired Augustinians in the spirit of caritas and culminated in a Kahoot! Trivia challenge.
The Leadership Summit is an initiative that grew out of the new Middle School Strategic Plan by providing opportunities for students to engage with their peers in experiences beyond the instructional classroom.

November is Remembrance Month
This November, the Office of Campus Ministry will be helping us remember those we have lost.
The month of November is a time for us to be mindful to pray for the faithful departed, especially our loved ones. Our faith assures us that the bonds of love that we have shared with them do not end with death. Throughout the month of November, we will remember all those we have loved in this life, and we will remember them at the Altar of the Lord.
First, Campus Ministry is planning on preparing a table at the back of the Chapel of St. Augustine which will work as a sacred altar for the deceased. Students, Staff, and Faculty are encouraged to bring in photos in memory of their loved ones. These will be left in the chapel throughout the month, and items can be collected before Thanksgiving Break. There will also be a memorial book where they can write the names of the deceased. If you have questions, please reach out to Theology Faculty, Sr. Paskazia Nakitende.
Second, as in year's past, we will be inviting you to submit the names of your deceased loved ones, which we will place at the foot of the altar in the Chapel of St. Augustine to be remembered in our masses, prayers and sacrifices, as an expression of our faith and in gratitude for your being part of the Austin Prep community. A form will be sent to the Austin Prep community prior to November 1st with instructions pertaining to how to submit names of your deceased loved ones.
Finally, Austin Prep will be celebrating All Saints' Day Mass on Monday, November 1st. More details regarding the Mass will be forthcoming.

Hometown: I was born and raised in Southern California. I spent my high school days in Placentia, CA, where my family currently resides.
Education/Degrees: I attended Miami University (OH) and obtained my Bachelor's degree, studying Communications and Marketing, and earned my Masters of Science in Kinesiology.
Years at Austin Prep: This is my 1st Year at Austin Prep.
Years working in Education: I have been working in education for about 8 years. I come from a family of educators. My father worked in education for almost 40 years and my sister is currently a 2nd grade teacher.
Department: College Counseling
If you weren’t a college counselor, what career would you have? If I was not a college counselor, I would be an FBI agent. I like to read people, solve problems, I am a big fan of true crime, and I have an incredible skill where I almost always can figure out the twist in any movie or book.
Describe a teacher who inspired you growing up: My dad - although my dad never taught me in school, the lessons he taught me throughout life, and to the thousands of kids throughout his teaching career are unparalleled. My dad is the type of teacher people remember for the rest of their lives. He stressed the importance of being a good person, the value of a strong work ethic, and that helping others succeed in life is the most rewarding thing a person can do.
Favorite Quote: “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have” - Theodore Roosevelt
Fun fact: I competed with Miami University’s Varsity Synchronized Skating Team. My sophomore year of college, we competed in Salzburg, Austria and represented not only the school, but the United States of America. We won a national championship my senior year.

Dr. Kuykendall Makes First Visit of 2021-2022 Academic Year
Dr. Crystal Kuykendall will visit campus on Tuesday, November 2nd and Wednesday, November 3rd to address our students on the importance of creating a sense of belonging for all students, developing personal responsibility, and being role models. Dr. Kuykendall first came to campus in March 2020 at the invitation of the Head of School to be the keynote speaker at the 2020 St. Augustine Lecture, Austin Prep’s most celebrated opportunity to enrich the intellectual life of the School. As a recognized expert who has astounded audiences across four continents and brought her lifetime of experience to Willow Street, Dr. Kuykendall deeply impressed faculty and students with her powerful storytelling and warm personality. She joined our team in the summer of 2020 to be our partner to advance our ongoing work to educate for justice.
Dr. Kuykendall has also taught at Seton Hall University and Montclair State University and is the former Executive Director of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. She has also served as the Director of Urban & Minority Relations for the National School Boards Association and the Director of the Citizens Training Institute of the National Committee for Citizens in Education.
November is Remembrance Month
All Saints' Day Mass will be celebrated on Monday
The month of November is a time for us to be mindful to pray for the faithful departed, especially our loved ones. Throughout the month of November, we will remember all those we have loved in this life, and we will remember them at the Altar of the Lord. - We will be celebrating All Saints' Day Mass on Monday, November 1st with a school-wide Mass. All Middle and Upper School students will be in Chapel Dress for the day. Upper School will continue to be in this uniform moving forward (see above regarding winter dress).
- November 6th is the Commemoration of Deceased Religious of the Order. As an Augustinian family we take this day to remember the deceased members of our Augustinian order, just as the Universal Church remembers all of the deceased on November 2nd in a similar manner.
- On November 13th, (St. Augustine's Birthday!) the Augustinians celebrate All the Saints of the Order (just as the the Universal Church celebrates All Saints Day on November 1st), calling to mind the many brothers and sisters of the order who have reached their ultimate goal. Their memory encourages and inspires us, and their prayers assist us as we seek to be united together with them in Christ in the fullness of life.
Celebrate Native American Heritage This November
Austin Prep continues to celebrate diverse cultures, and looks forward to Native American Heritage Month, which runs from November 1st - 30th. Throughout the Month we will be highlighting either individuals or tribes who have made a dramatic impact within Native American History. Austin Prep is committed to supporting and embracing Native American Tribes and people, while preserving their sacred heritage, culture, and beliefs for future generations.

Max Hampoian '23 Takes State Golf Title
Max Hampoian '23 won the MIAA Division II state championship on Monday.
Despite the unfavorably raw, wet, and breezy conditions on Monday, Austin Prep's Max Hampoian '23 rose to the occasion, shooting a 3-under 69 to claim the MIAA Division II state championship at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland. Max finished one stroke ahead of St. Mary's of Lynn golfer Aidan Emmerich and Tyngsborough's Trevor Drew, both of whom finished at 2-under 70. Max's efforts also led the team to a tie for fifth place in the event.
"I played my best golf ever on Monday, and it just happened to be the most important round of my life," Max said. "It was a close finish, and I was paired with the guy (Emmerich) I ended up beating by a stroke. On 18 I hit driver and he hit the ball into the woods, and I was pretty confident at that point."
With the individual title, Max adds to the Hampoian golf legacy at Austin Prep. Max's brother, Nick '18, was the MIAA Division III state individual champion as a junior.
"Joining my brother is awesome," Max said. "He has been giving me a bad time for a while about not having a ring and now I finally have one."

Middle School Students Complete Quarterly Science Projects
Sixth and seventh grade students published their quarterly science projects this week. Students exercised creativity in creating a tactile model of content learned in class. Sixth graders focused on layers of the Earth in Earth and Space Science. Seventh graders created representations of parts of a cell as part of their opening unit in Life Science. In the second part of the project, students demonstrated their growing comfortability with digital content by creating slideshows on their iPads for publishing on the class project websites. The Austin Prep community is invited to explore the various projects of our students through the following Google sites: Layers of the Earth (Grade 6) and Cell City (Grade 7).

Augustinian Friar on Track for Sainthood
Father Bill Atkinson, O.S.A.
A history-making Augustinian friar has made it one step closer to sainthood after a ceremony last week at the Church of St. Thomas of Villanova, located on the campus of Villanova University. Father Bill Atkinson, O.S.A., a popular Augustinian priest and high school teacher, will have his name submitted by Archbishop of Philadelphia Nelson Pérez to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints, with ultimately Pope Francis making the final call regarding the outcome of the cause.
Upon graduating from high school in 1964, Father Atkinson asked to join the Augustinian Order, and spent a year as a postulant at the Augustinian Academy in Staten Island, New York, before entering Villanova Province’s novitiate of Our Mother of Good Counsel in New Hamburg, New York. While studying to be a priest, Father Atkinson was severely injured in a winter toboggan accident, leaving him almost completely paralyzed from the neck down. He survived the accident, and despite being confined to a motorized wheelchair for the rest of his life, continued in his desire to continue as an Augustinian. A care team of friars assisted Father Atkinson during his time in formation, and he completed his years of college and theological studies at Villanova.
Father Atkinson became the church’s first quadriplegic to be ordained a priest after receiving special dispensation from Pope Paul VI, and in 1974, almost nine years after the accident that left him a quadriplegic, he celebrated his first Mass at the Fieldhouse of Villanova University.
For nearly thirty years, Father Atkinson taught at Msgr. Bonner High School outside Philadelphia, where he was a theology faculty member and school chaplain, senior class retreat coordinator, moderator of the football team, and the director of the after-school and Saturday detention program. He was the recipient of many awards and acknowledgements, among them an honorary doctorate from Villanova University in 2000, and was known as an excellent teacher and moderator as well as for his love of life, deep compassion, bright sense of humor, and his gratitude despite his challenges. He died in 2006.
Archbishop Pérez presided over last week's Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s closing session in the diocesan, which was attended by local and international leaders of the Augustinian order. To learn more about Father Atkinson and the canonization process, click here.

Masks Continue Through January 15th
Earlier this week, Massachusetts education leaders announced the extension of the universal mask-wearing requirement through January 15th, 2022, a decision which has also been adopted by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston and their schools. Austin Prep will use that date as the next opportunity to reevaluate our school policy as well.
