Students Living our Mission
Check this space monthly as we recognize students demonstrating our values on campus.
Sommer Bianchi '23 has been providing extra help to students in both math and writing.
Unitas is a key component of what distinguishes an Augustinian education from all others. We continue to look forward to working together to strengthen our community in a way that is reflective of our core values of veritas, unitas, and caritas.
As we do so, the Office of Student Life aims to build students of strong character while recognizing exemplary behavior on campus. Students who best display the values that are distinctive to the Austin Prep experience will be acknowledged monthly here in the Cougar Courier and on social media.
This month, we would like to recognize the work of Sommer Bianchi ‘23. Sommer has been providing extra help to other students in Algebra, Precalculus, and writing during Cougar Blocks. Her caring nature and willingness to help others is what we look for in our students. Great job, Sommer!

Black History Month Programming
Literature by Black authors analyzed in English classes
Jake Zawatsky '24 and Lee Poulin '23 research Black authors in Mrs. Nicole Putney's English class.
Austin Prep celebrates Black History Month with a series of educational, extracurricular, and school wide events organized around the school’s yearlong theme of "Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out," (Proverbs 10:9) as is embedded in our Augustinian heritage and Catholic tradition. We look forward to highlighting activities held on campus this month to celebrate Black history.
In celebration of Black History Month, 8th grade students are researching figures from American history and their impact on the worlds of politics, music, athletics, and science. Earlier this week in English classes, students selected the person they want to study and began their research project by reading a brief teacher-supplied biography and answering text-dependent questions. Over the course of the month, students will complete additional elements of the project – i.e. other research – and then bring this research together in an infographic highlighting the importance of this particular individual. Students are excited to explore the materials associated with their person or study when they visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. next month as part of their Civics Capstone trip. The project was designed by Ms. Alex Dell'Anno '12, English faculty, as a way for students to gain a deeper appreciation of these important people while also practicing their emergent research skills.

Information and dates on future guests will be made available in advance of the event.
Austin Prep Welcomes Augustinians to Campus for Mass
Fr. Heirs, left, with Fr. Narog and Austin Prep students before Monday's Mass.
Fr. Joseph Narog, O.S.A. was on campus Monday to celebrate Mass for World Day for Consecrated Life, and while here, introduced Fr. Jeremy Hiers, O.S.A. to the Austin Prep community. Fr. Hiers delivered the homily: “When we pray for things in life, God sends people – parents, teachers, friends – into our life to help us. What does God ask from you in return? For you to go and do the same.”
To close the Mass, Fr. Narog reflected on this visit to Austin Prep as well as visits in past years, noting how much he enjoys the trips to Austin Prep, crediting us for being very "Augustinian," from the statue of St. Augustine in the foyer to the Austin Prep choir singing the "Prayer of St. Augustine" during Mass. You can view photos from the Mass here.
Sixth Grade Students Present the Egyptian Museum
Sixth grade students and their families gathered in the Father Smith Library on Tuesday night for the seventh annual Egyptian Museum. This annual capstone is the product of students' recent work in their History and English classes. Students collaborated with classmates to create exhibits such as models of Egyptian pyramids and other architectural sites or hieroglyphic displays and individually filmed and edited book talks on literature set in ancient Egypt. At the Museum, students acted as docents in escorting friends and families through the exhibition and sharing facts about particular topics that they individually researched like King Tut, cats, Cleopatra, and the mummification process. Students will next "set sail" for ancient Greece and Rome as their Becoming Historians course continues. A special thanks to the following teachers for designing the projects and organizing the Museum Capstone: Mrs. Leeann Blais, English Faculty, Mr. Jack Brady, History Faculty, Ms. Alexandra Dell'Anno '12, English Faculty, Mr. Colin Kiley, History Faculty and Assistant Dean of Students for the Upper School, and Ms. Alicia Varraso, History Faculty and Assistant Dean of Students for the Middle School. You can view photos from the event here.

Kayla Onorato '27 speaks as a part of the Middle School Accepted Students dinner panel, moderated by Dr. Hickey.
On Thursday, Dr. and Mrs. Hickey hosted a dinner event at the Andover Country Club for the parents of accepted Middle School students. At this annual event, parents had the opportunity to meet fellow parents and interact and ask questions of the school leadership in attendance. The highlight of the night followed dinner when parents were provided with the forum to ask questions of our student panel. Our students represented Austin Prep well and provided prospective parents an authentic glimpse into the Austin Prep experience.
Ice Hockey Programs Participate in Best Buddies Program
Last Sunday, Austin Prep's Best Buddies club participated in an event run by Northeast Arc at the Lynnfield MarketStreet Skating Rink. Significant events in Black history chronicled through art work
Students in Mr. Davíd Cárdenas' Middle School art classes summarized significant Black History events through art. Students conducted historical research on notable Black individuals, who by refusing to take up positions of inequity, left a lasting impression. The students were to choose a person or event and then use collage to create a poster that would graphically depict that individual using aspects from their person's life narrative. They further emphasized the significance of each individual or historical event by utilizing magazines, printed photographs, hand drawings, and other tools like paint and markers. These posters created a timeline of Black History through the lives of historical figures and events. The work is on display in the Fr. Smith Library.
Robotics Club Excels at Local Competition
Last Sunday the Austin Prep robotics teams competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge Robostorm 8.2 at Andover High School. Team 15626, represented by Jamey Bergeron '25, Max Betts '25, Kyle Brickhouse '25, Aaden Caralis '25, Nick Kuntz '25, and Aaron Wilcox '25, advanced to the semi-final elimination round and brought home the Innovate Award. The Innovate Award celebrates a Team that thinks imaginatively and has the ingenuity, creativity, and inventiveness to make their designs come to life. This judged award is given to the Team that has the most innovative and creative Robot design solution to any specific components in the FIRST Tech Challenge game. Elements of this award include elegant design, robustness, and ‘out of the box’ thinking related to design. This award may address the design of the whole Robot or of a sub-assembly attached to the Robot. The creative component must work consistently, but a Robot does not have to work all the time during matches to be considered for this award. The Team’s engineering portfolio must include a summary of the design of the component or components and the Team’s Robot to be eligible for this award. Entries must describe how the Team arrived at their solution.
Team 9006, represented by Rahul Gupta '23, Maddy Shih '24, Victor Villarroel '24, and Michael Young '24, advanced all the way to the final elimination round, and brought home the design award. This judged award recognizes design elements of the Robot that are both functional and aesthetic. The Design Award is presented to Teams that incorporate industrial design elements into their solution. These design elements could simplify the Robot’s appearance by giving it a clean look, be decorative in nature, or otherwise express the creativity of the Team. The Robot should be durable, efficiently designed, and effectively address the game challenge.
