Join us for Sunday Community Mass Tomorrow
Join us Sunday for the first Sunday Community Mass in the renovated Chapel of St. Augustine.
On Sunday, October 2nd, we will have our first monthly Sunday Community Mass of the new academic year at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Augustine.
We will offer a monthly Sunday Mass announced at the beginning of each month. We encourage our school families who regularly attend Sunday Mass at their local parish to consider joining us for this monthly Sunday Mass. The Mass will give us an opportunity to meet each other and pray together, at least occasionally.
As we start the monthly Masses, the Sisters will offer the music, but as we go on we would encourage students to join the Sisters in providing the music. We will join for a time of fellowship in the Dining Hall after Mass. To help us with our planning, we would ask families to RSVP by clicking here so we can take an appropriate count for the Coffee and Donut Hour.
Students are required to attend with their parents. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we strengthen each other through this act of celebrating Mass together.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Continues
Austin Prep looks forward to celebrating diverse cultures, starting with Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th. During this time, we will recognize the contributions, achievements and influence of Hispanic Americans on the history and culture of the United States. This month is significant as it includes the date of independence for many Hispanic countries.
Throughout the month we will provide students with opportunities to embrace and celebrate Hispanic culture. Upcoming activities include:
October 5th - Learn How to Salsa Dance
Location: Dance Room
Time: 2:45 - 4:00 p.m.
Are you a good dancer? Do you love to dance? Well, come learn how to Salsa. On October 5th, students will have the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and learn how to Salsa dance. During this activity, students will learn about the origin of Salsa dancing and the importance it brings to the Hispanic community and culture. Snacks will be provided for students who are participating.
October 19th - Remembering the Day of the Dead
Location: Art Room / Gathering Room
Time: 2:45 - 5:00 p.m.
The day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday where families are able to connect with family and friends who have moved on to eternal life. Students will be educated on the importance of the day of the dead and will be able to create and design their own sugar skulls that will be dedicated to someone in their family who has moved on to eternal life. After decorating their skulls, students will proceed down to the Gathering Room where they will watch the movie “Coco." Students will have the option to keep their skulls or display them on the Mission and Inclusion wall. Snacks will be provided for students who are participating in the event.
Partnering with SAGE Dining
Through the collaboration of Sage Dining and the Office of Mission and Inclusion, we will be highlighting countries within the Hispanic communities. On October 6th, Sage Dining will be offering cuisine from Argentina, and on October 11th, Sage Dining will be offering cuisine from Chile. These cuisines will be a chance for students to learn about Hispanic culture and identity.

Support the Austin Prep Fund This Fall
Austin Prep is a special place, and this year is a special milestone for the School. In 1963, Austin Prep welcomed students to campus and throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, our community will join to celebrate and commemorate the educational and spiritual growth of our students over the last sixty years.
The Austin Prep Fund has impelled this growth. It provides students an educational experience rich in faith, scholarship, and character – in the classroom and beyond. Small class sizes, technology, teacher professional development, a robust athletics program, performance art, and tuition assistance are all made possible by the Austin Prep Fund. The Austin Prep experience is made possible by YOU.
Last year, contributions to the Austin Prep Fund totaled nearly $500,000 and reflected record-high participation from our community. The support from parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and friends fortifies our philanthropic culture, resulting in a transformational experience that will last students their lifetime. The Austin Prep experience is extraordinary because of YOU.
In October, we invite you to help us continue to deliver a high-quality education rooted in our Augustinian tradition of veritas, unitas, and caritas. Your gift directly supports the Austin Prep student experience, today and in the years ahead. Click here to make a gift today!

Students Living our Mission
Check this space monthly as we recognize students demonstrating our values on campus.
Ryleigh Vadala ‘27 and Alex Fernandes ‘25 have shown great character on campus to start the year.
Unitas is a key component of what distinguishes an Augustinian education from all others. We continue to look forward to working together to strengthen our community in a way that is reflective of our core values of veritas, unitas, and caritas.
As we do so, the Office of Student Life aims to build students of strong character while recognizing exemplary behavior on campus. Students who best display the values that are distinctive to the Austin Prep experience will be acknowledged monthly here in the Cougar Courier and on social media.
This month, we would like to recognize the work of Ryleigh Vadala ‘27 and Alex Fernandes ‘25. During orientation, Ryleigh welcomed new students into her advisory and made everyone feel part of the community. Alex earned the most merits of any student on campus during the first month of classes by helping teachers and athletic staff, and by working to keep our community clean. Their leadership and integrity are qualities we look for in our students.
Mrs. Choate Contributes Book Review for MiddleWeb
Austin Prep Faculty continue their professional development outside of the classroom. In recent years, several faculty members have served as book reviewers for MiddleWeb, a website that provides resources for teachers, school leaders, parents and others interested in the success of young adolescents.
Ms. Stephanie Choate recently had her first book review published. Her review of Get Organized Digitally! The Educator’s Guide to Time Management, can be read here. We can expect to see additional Austin Prep MiddleWeb book reviews published over the course of the school year.
Green Key Ambassadors Prepare for Open House
Austin Prep Green Key Ambassadors met for the first time in the 2022-2023 academic year in preparation for Open House.
On Friday, over 200 Head Green Key and Green Key Ambassadors met in Meelia Hall for their first group training opportunity of the 2022-2023 academic year. Austin Prep's Green Key Ambassadors are an invaluable connection between our admissions office and prospective families. At Friday's training, Green Keys focused on many topics, ranging from what it means to be a good leader to what a great Shadow Day experience looks like.
The Green Keys were preparing in part for the annual Fall Open House on Sunday, October 23rd from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. for future students interested in grades 6 - 11. Some of our best referrals come from current Austin Prep parents. Guests should pre-register for the open house on the Austin Prep Admissions page.

Austin Prep to Celebrate "Hall of Heroes" This Veterans' Day
Austin Prep invites community members to recognize family members for Veterans' Day through our Hall of Heroes. Community members are asked to download, complete, and send in this digital template. The template asks for members to fill in the name, rank, and branch of service of a family member, living or deceased, who served in the United States military. The template also has space for a photo and a couple of sentences about the individual's record of service. Community members may submit more than one. Austin Prep will then print off the slides and display them during the week of Veterans' Day in our Hallway of Heroes. Please submit your entry to Mr. Michael McLaughlin, Head of Middle School, no later than November 1st with the subject line "Hall of Heroes" at mmclaughlin@austinprep.org.
Anatomage Table Uses Technology to Advance Science Instruction
As we have noted, late last academic year, following brainstorming sessions with science faculty and parents with professional backgrounds in STEM, Austin Prep committed to investing greater resources to expanding the footprint of our science labs. The resulting summer work involved converting instructional space that was not previously a science lab into space that is now a state of the art classroom. Based on current best practices, this first lab is modular and flexible to support teaching and learning in the life, chemical, and physical sciences in both the Upper and Middle Schools. This renovation was a first step in a multiyear plan to upgrade science facilities to ensure that Austin Prep students will be well prepared for college and beyond.
The highlight of the new science lab is a new Anatomage Table, which is a 3D anatomy and virtual dissection table used in colleges and medical schools. This past week Austin Prep students began to have the opportunity to use the table in the classroom. Students in freshman biology and forensics classes explored lessons and a case study involving a tibial fracture.
What a Goal!
Isabella Tenreiro '23 scored on a free kick this week vs. Phillips Andover.
You've probably seen plenty of free kick goals from Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo over the years, but did you see the one from Isabella Tenreiro '23 during the Austin Prep Girls Soccer 3-1 victory over Phillips Andover on Wednesday? If not, check it out here!
Middle School Students Participate in Campus Ministry Retreat
Thursday's 8th grade campus ministry retreat began with Mass with Father Patrick.
This past week, the Campus Ministry Office provided middle school students with an opportunity for deeper reflection and for connecting with classmates through an on-campus retreat. The Campus Ministry Office partnered with NET Ministries to deliver this retreat for our students. NET Ministries is a Catholic Ministry made up of university-aged missionaries who devote a year of their lives to bring Christ to today’s youth. Additional information about NET Ministries can be found here.
Students in the 6th and 7th grade participated in their retreat on Wednesday. The theme of their retreat was Love One Another. Students in the 8th grade participated in their retreat on Thursday. The theme of their retreat was True Presence (Eucharist). Throughout the activities of the day, students had the opportunity to reflect on our core values of veritas, unitas and caritas and reflect on Christ’s love for us.
Class of 2025 Visits Boundless Adventures
The Class of 2025 had a great class trip Thursday to Boundless Adventures! It was a beautiful day for sophomores to spend time together and create memories with friends and classmates. Last week, the Freshman Class of 2026 visited Boda Borg Boston. The Office of Student Life looks forward to planning more class based trips as the year progresses.
Unitas Leadership Academy Meets for First Time of 2022-2023 Year
Assistant Head of School for Enrollment and Athletics Jonathan Pollard '97 and Unitas Leadership Academy (ULA) facilitator Christopher Niles work with ULA participants on Friday.
The first leadership training workshop for the Unitas Leadership Academy (ULA) took place on campus on Friday. The workshop was also combined with the Office of Admissions Upper School Green Key Ambassador training as Green Keys prepare for their vital role in the upcoming fall Open House on Sunday, October 23rd.
Christopher Niles, who has facilitated leadership training with ULA students over the years, coordinated the activities. Students at Austin Prep who have been identified as leaders in the Austin Prep community are nominated by faculty and staff for the opportunity to participate in the program. To keep the program experience personal and to maximize student leadership growth, a limited number of spots are available. The focus of ULA is to assist Austin Prep student leaders in their growth, understanding, and application of leadership. Students in ULA explore both the theoretical and practical aspects of leadership. In previous years, students explored leadership through outdoor adventure education, participating in field trips, and on-campus programs.

Open House is a Week From Tomorrow!
Parents, add this graphic as your social media profile to help us spread the word about open house.
On Sunday, October 23rd the Austin Prep community will open its doors from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to prospective students and families for our hallmark admissions event, the Fall Open House. Current parents are among our greatest resources when connecting with prospective families.
In addition to the traditional lawn signs promoting our Open House, which can be picked up in the Main Office, we are also adding a digital approach. If you currently have a personal social media account (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and are willing to assist us, we are asking that you consider changing your profile picture to the graphic we've attached here until Sunday, October 23rd.
To accompany your profile picture change, we ask you to include a brief comment about your experience such as "If you are looking for a new school next year, please consider applying to Austin Prep!" We ask that you please be sure to end your post with, "Begin your Austin Prep Journey here: Austin Prep's Fall Open House."
Our October Open House provides prospective families an opportunity to gain a better understanding of what sets Austin Prep apart. If you know any families who are interested in registering for our Fall Open House, please feel free to direct them to: Austin Prep's Fall Open House.
Lastly, we are still looking for Parent Volunteers to staff our registration tables and to help welcome prospective families. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Ryan Patrie, Director of Admissions.

Missing Something? Come Check out our Lost and Found
These are among the current items in our lost and found. Anything belong to you?
Mrs. Nicole Barletta and Mrs. Sara Bonica, Administrative Assistants in the Main Office, have been hard at work keeping the space well organized for not only our students but for guests. That said, we are over a month into the school year and we are starting to see the number of lost and found items increase. Please lend Mrs. Barletta and Mrs. Bonica a hand and come retrieve any lost items that may have been returned to the Main Office. Students should check the lost and found as soon as they realize something is missing. Current unclaimed items will only be held through the end of October, and in general, items will be kept for just one month. Thank you!
Sixth and Seventh Grade Students Enjoy Field Day
Central to our Augustinian identity is the charism of unitas, or community. This is something we truly cultivate and celebrate through programs within and beyond the classroom. The opportunity to engage with peers and participate in activities contributes to this feeling of community and the special spirit of Austin Prep. On Wednesday, Austin Prep 6th and 7th Grade students enjoyed a beautiful day outdoors with classmates during the Middle School Fall Field Day. Faculty led students in organized games such as capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, soccer, kickball, and yard games. You can view photos from the day here.
Eighth Graders Travel to Minute Man National Historical Park
Also on Wednesday, our 8th grade students traveled with faculty off campus to interact with local historic sites. Students visited Minute Man National Historical Park in Lexington. This wonderful opportunity aligned with the 8th grade Civics curriculum as students are currently learning about the American Revolution and the role Massachusetts played during this critical time in our history.

SAVI Delegation Departs for Chicago
An Austin Prep delegation departed Thursday for St. Rita of Cascia in Chicago for the Student Augustinian Values Institute (SAVI). While there, students will examine our core values with students from other Augustinian schools, and we anticipate that students will return to Austin Prep with an even greater understanding of our shared Augustinian values and a stronger appreciation of our school’s mission. Following community meeting last week the students received a blessing from Fr. Patrick Armano, School Chaplain.
Eliza Martin '25, Janna Vounessea '25, Neve Fitzgerald '25, Bree Anderson '25, Michael McCarthy '25, Ben Bradshaw '25, Alex Fernandes '25, and PJ Connor '25 are accompanied on the trip by Mrs. Michelle Connor, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Mr. Dustin Batista, Chair of the Theology Department and Coordinator of Service.
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Concludes
During Hispanic Heritage Month, which ran from September 15th to October 15th, we recognized the contributions, achievements and influence of Hispanic Americans on the history and culture of the United States. We are grateful for all the students, faculty and staff in our community who helped recognize the occasion, and look forward to continuing to celebrate diverse cultures throughout this year. On Friday, Cecilia Goldsmith '26 read the opening prayer to start the school day in Spanish. Watch the video of here above!
“Dios, Concédeme la Serenidad Para Aceptar las Cosas que no puedo cambiar, El Valor Para Cambiar las Cosas que Puedo, y la Sabiduría para reconocer la diferencia” Amén
We have one more activity to celebrate the month:

Updates from the Office of College Counseling
Members of the Class of 2023 continue their work in the college application process.
Thank you to all students and teachers who made testing day a success. Scores will be available in early to mid-December. An email will be sent to families around that time to explain how to access and interpret the scores. Mr. Erik Sullivan, English and SAT Prep Faculty, will also be reviewing scores and strategies in the test prep course with Juniors when results are released.
The first wave of application materials for the October 15th deadlines have been submitted to colleges and universities. Our students are working hard to finish up their applications for the November 1st deadlines. As a reminder to seniors, drop in sessions are happening in the College Counseling Office. This is a time for you to stop in during your free block to meet with the counselor on duty. It does not have to be your college counselor; just sign up based on the time that works for you! The counselor is happy to review your Common Application, main and supplemental essays and answer any questions you may have. Below are the Calendly links with the available time slots for the next few weeks. Please check each calendar to find a time that aligns with your free block.

Next Sunday Community Mass is November 13th
On Sunday, November 13th, we will have our next Sunday Community Mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St.
To help us with our planning, we would ask families to RSVP using this link so we can take an appropriate count for the Coffee and Donut Hour.
Students are required to attend with their parents. We look forward to meeting you as we strengthen each other through this act of celebrating Mass together.

Ushearnda Stroud Announced as New Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach
Ushearnda Stroud, pictured with Director of Athletics Patrick Driscoll '97, was announced Thursday as Austin Prep's new Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach.
Austin Prep announced Thursday the appointment of Ushearnda Stroud as Austin Prep’s next Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Coach Stroud takes the helm of the program after achieving considerable playing and coaching success, as well as experience on the AAU basketball circuit.
"As with any coaching position at Austin Prep, the best candidate will have the right experience, exceptional gifts, and be mission-aligned. We are fortunate to add an individual who brings a unique balance of these attributes, " Director of Athletics Patrick Driscoll '97 said. "Coach Stroud's experience, appreciation of our School's mission, and passion for developing the student-athlete makes her an excellent choice to lead our Girls Basketball Program."
A Georgia native, Coach Stroud comes to Austin Prep from Brooks School, where she has served as the head coach since the 2018-2019 season. Most notably, she led the team to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class B title in 2019-20 and 2021-22, and was the NEPSAC Class B Coach of the Year in 2022, a year in which Brooks finished undefeated for the first time in school history. Brooks also captured the ISL championship for the first time in school history during that undefeated 2021-22 year.
Prior to her time at Brooks, Coach Stroud held coaching positions at Watertown High School, Notre Dame Cristo Rey High School, Salem State University and at Lawrence High School. Recent student-athletes who played for Coach Stroud are continuing their academic and basketball careers at UConn, Boston College, Marquette, Syracuse, Providence, Rutgers, Richmond, Illinois, Drexel, Brown, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Sacred Heart, UMass Amherst, and the University of New Hampshire. That list includes Brooks' first ever male or female Gatorade Player of the Year, Taina Mair, who is currently at Boston College.
Additionally, Coach Stroud is the Girl’s Director of Mass Lady Rivals, an Adidas 3SSB program, and coaches the Lady Rivals Adidas National Gauntlet AAU Team. Outside of basketball, Coach Stroud is the Executive Director of International Childcare, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide inclusive and therapeutic educational services for families in Malden, MA, and surrounding communities.
Prior to her coaching and professional career, Coach Stroud played basketball collegiately and then professionally in Germany. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Sacred Heart University.
In addition to her coaching duties, Coach Stroud will also serve as Coordinator of After School and Summer Programming at Austin Prep.
Coach Stroud is enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead the Austin Prep Girls Basketball Program. "I would like to thank Director of Athletics Patrick Driscoll and Head of School James Hickey for entrusting me with the position of head girls basketball coach here at Austin Prep," Coach Stroud said. "I have great experiences coaching in the NEPSAC, and I am excited to lead this program in their transition to the NEPSAC and guide the program towards continued success."
Coach Stroud, who is on the Board of the NEPSAC Girls Basketball Association, will enthusiastically continue to develop our student-athletes, which makes her an excellent choice to lead our basketball program as Austin Prep transitions into playing in the NEPSAC this winter.

November is Remembrance Month
All Saints' Day Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday
The month of November is a time for us to be mindful to pray for the faithful departed, especially our loved ones. Our faith assures us that the bonds of love that we have shared with them do not end with death. Throughout the month of November, we will remember all those we have loved in this life, and we will remember them at the Altar of the Lord. Please note the following, including special dates within the Augustinian order.
- Campus Ministry will have a table at the back of the Chapel of St. Augustine which will work as a sacred altar for the deceased. There will be a memorial book where students and staff can write the names of the deceased. If you have questions, please reach out to Director of Campus Ministry, Sr. Maria Gorreth Nassali.
- You are invited to submit the names of your deceased loved ones, which we will place at the foot of the altar in the Chapel of St. Augustine to be remembered in our masses, prayers and sacrifices, as an expression of our faith and in gratitude for your being part of the Austin Prep community. An email will be sent to the entire community next week with instructions pertaining to how to submit names of your deceased loved ones.
- We will be celebrating All Saints' Day Mass on Tuesday, November 1st with a school-wide Mass. All Middle and Upper School students will be in Chapel Dress for the day.
- November 6th is the Commemoration of Deceased Religious of the Order. As an Augustinian family we take this day to remember the deceased members of our Augustinian order, just as the Universal Church remembers all of the deceased on November 2nd – All Souls' Day – in a similar manner.
- As an additional reminder, the next Sunday Community Mass is Sunday, November 13th. You can RSVP here.

Dr. Crystal Kuykendall Visits Austin Prep, Talks Inclusion
Dr. Crystal Kuykendall visited campus for the first time this academic year on Thursday, October 27th and addressed students on ways to help create inclusive learning environments, especially as it pertains to those with physical and learning disabilities. She focused on these topics through the lens of veritas, unitas, and caritas, and in the context of our theme for the year: Whoever walks in integrity walks securely... (Proverbs 10:9)
We are grateful that students new to the Austin Prep community had the opportunity to attend her lecture, as Dr. Kuykendall has been a regular visitor to campus in recent years. Dr. Kuykendall first came to Austin Prep in March 2020 at the invitation of the Head of School to be the keynote speaker at the 2020 St. Augustine Lecture, Austin Prep’s most celebrated opportunity to enrich the intellectual life of the School. As a recognized expert who has astounded audiences across four continents and brought her lifetime of experience to Willow Street, Dr. Kuykendall deeply impressed faculty and students with her powerful storytelling and warm personality. She joined our team in the summer of 2020 to be our partner to advance our ongoing work to educate for justice.
Dr. Kuykendall has also taught at Seton Hall University and Montclair State University and is the former Executive Director of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. Students Living our Mission
Check this space monthly as we recognize students demonstrating our values on campus.
Joey Magliozzi ‘25 and Mark Palumbo '28 have exhibited exemplary character on campus.
This month, we would like to recognize the work of Joey Magliozzi ‘25 and Mark Palumbo ‘28. On multiple occasions, Joey has gone out of his way to include teammates and other students during lunch and school activities to ensure everyone feels a part of the Austin community. Mark did an outstanding job as a Shadow during the first week of October. He went above and beyond to make sure his Shadow had a great experience, giving him a tour of the fourth floor science wing and labs, as well as getting him an afternoon snack. Their leadership and integrity are qualities we look for in our students.
