Welcome Back!
We hope everyone had a restful break with loved ones as we celebrated the birth of Christ. Thank you to everyone who played a part in yet another joyful Christmas season at Austin Prep.
With the New Year upon us, there is so much to look forward to in the second half of the 2023-2024 academic year. Winter sports will soon transition to spring; the middle school will turn its attention to signature programs such as the 6th grade Egyptian Museum, the 7th grade May Tea, and the 8th grade capstone trip to Washington DC; Art and Design students will prepare for the spring musical performance of Grease and year-end art shows; the spiritual life of campus will focus on the Lenten season; and we will prepare to wish the Class of 2024 well as they get ready for their next Journey, guided by their Augustinian Hearts.
The spring at Austin Prep can come fast and furious, so take a minute to enjoy the Journey. And if you need a break, don't forget that the Cardinal's Holiday is Friday, March 15th. Let's have a great winter and spring!
Introducing the Scientist Seminar Series
The inaugural lecture in the Scientist Seminar Series will occur on Thursday, January 11th.
Austin Prep is proud to introduce our Scientist Seminar Series this semester. The goal of the program is to build connections between students’ classroom learning and real-world applications by showcasing how scientists from various fields are applying content and skills to explore and understand our world. This series aims to provide students with a broader perspective on the practical implications of their academic studies and inspire them to see the relevance and impact of scientific research.
This academic initiative has been developed over the past year to enhance the student experience in the sciences. We are grateful to the many scientists at esteemed universities and research facilities who have contributed their time and expertise in guiding Austin Prep in creating this experience for our students.
Over the next few months, every Austin Prep student will have the opportunity to hear from a practicing scientist about their professional Journey and current research. Our esteemed guests are on the faculty at some of the world’s top-flight hospitals and universities that are at the vanguard of research on a variety of topics. Among our guests are members of the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Duke University, and the University of California at Santa Barbara.
The inaugural lecture in the Scientist Seminar Series will occur on Thursday, January 11th. Calculus Students Derive Fun From Board Game Assignment
Students in Mrs. Alison Pliskaner and Mr. Jason Sun's Calculus Honors classes worked on a month-long project involving derivative rules. The students worked in groups to design their own board games or reinvent an existing board game. Students had to create a description of their board game, make a detailed rule book, and integrate 20 functions to differentiate. The board games required that students find derivatives of the functions in order to progress through the game. The project culminated with students playing their classmates' board games. You can view photos here.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Honored This Week in Classrooms
Mr. Jaycob Morales, Coordinator of Inclusion and Community Engagement, visited History, Theology, and English classrooms throughout the week to offer a reflection on the historic work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to share how the Office of Mission and Inclusion honors his legacy of love and nonviolence. Mr. Morales not only shared his life experience, but he also focused on how Dr. King emphasized peaceful protests and operating in love to promote equity and equal rights. "At Austin Prep it is essential that we demonstrate caritas in the classroom so everyone can feel a sense of comfort and belonging."
Sophomore students enrolled in our Speeches class analyzed the rhetorical influences on and the oratorical devices used by Dr. King in his groundbreaking "I Have A Dream" speech that was delivered at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. Students worked on a culminating project designed to examine and reflect on the issues expressed by Dr. King and "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry. Students considered present day issues and concerns regarding racism and how we use language to construct our viewpoints of race and social status.
Ristuccia Arena Locker Rooms Unveiled...Part Two
Back in November, on the eve of their season openers, the new Austin Prep Boys and Girls Ice Hockey locker and training room facilities at their home facility Ristuccia Arena were unveiled to the teams. Every Day 6...Community Meetings Bring Austin Prep Together
Community Meetings are informational...and fun. This week's meeting produced these wonderful snowmen.
One of the best ways to see unitas in action on campus is Community Meeting. Community Meetings are a student-led assembly that happen every Day 6 in the rotation. It is a time for all students, faculty, and staff to come together to celebrate accomplishments, learn important information, and enjoy some friendly competition between the classes.
Community Meeting is spearheaded by the seven seniors who make up Schoolwide Student Government. Each week they meet to discuss the important items occurring on campus which will eventually be covered at the week's meeting. They are responsible for creating the agenda, creating the slide deck, confirming prayer leaders, finding speakers, and making sure that they have all the necessary materials and participants for competitions. They serve as the main hosts of the meeting. Schoolwide government practices for Community Meeting like actors in a performance. They go over what will be said and how they will transition from one topic to the next. They practice their public speaking and crowd management skills, sometimes even participating in trainings run by members of the community such as Ms. Katherine Clark who teaches in the Art and Design Department.
Like all things at Austin Prep, Community Meeting touches on our three core values. The meeting’s agenda is broken up into three sections: vertias, unitas, and caritas. The caritas portion of Community Meeting celebrates recent accomplishments within the community such as highlighting a grant for a community service project that was awarded to four siblings within the community. The veritas section covers important information and ranges from going over an upcoming special schedule to informational presentations. Students and faculty have the opportunity to get up and speak whether it’s presenting on “Coping with Stress During Exams” or speaking about the Lunar New Year. The final portion of Community Meeting, the unitas section, is when classes compete in fun competitions. The competitions are run by the student government of each grade who plan the activity. Planning these activities starts with summer meetings where students brainstorm different ideas. Recently the sophomore class hosted a spelling bee and this week the freshmen class hosted a snowman building relay (see photo above). Middle school is up next in the rotation! Student government members of every grade are responsible for finding participants to represent their grade. Their goal is always to find new faces to represent the class. Every community meeting is truly a community activity guided by our student leaders across all the classes.
Meet the "Humans of Austin Prep"
Students in Art and Design Faculty Ms. Nicolle Renick’s Digital Photography classes recently finished their “Humans of Austin Prep” project, based on New York City photographer Brandon Stanton’s famed "Humans of New York" project. Students were to photograph three subjects, including at least one adult. They used a set of interview questions to spark thoughtful responses from their subjects. The focus was on using correct aperture and interesting poses and backgrounds to create a meaningful and well-composed portrait.
In referencing his Humans of New York project, Stanton said, "Humans of New York" began as a photography project in 2010. The initial goal was to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers on the street, and create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants. Somewhere along the way, I began to interview my subjects in addition to photographing them. And alongside their portraits, I would include quotes and short stories from their lives.”
Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, with over twenty million followers on social media, providing a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers on the streets of New York City. Want a glimpse into the lives of those who occupy the offices, classrooms, and hallways of Austin Prep? Check out the art gallery to see the full installation of photos and interviews conducted by our students.

Roughly 25 students and staff were in attendance and enjoyed the energetic and positive morning.
NEASC Accreditation Executive Summary | Strategic Planning
As noted in Head of School Dr. James Hickey's Thursday's letter to the parent community, last academic year Austin Prep successfully completed the accreditation process of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). At the conclusion of the accreditation visit, the accreditation committee unanimously supported Austin Prep’s continued accreditation without any stipulations, the best possible outcome. In the spring of 2023, NEASC’s Commission on Independent Schools voted unanimously to grant continued accreditation for Austin Prep through 2032. We would like to share with you the executive summary of the NEASC Accreditation Report.
As we begin 2024, Austin Prep is well-positioned to bring our 2019-2024 Strategic Plan to a close and engage in some strategic thinking to craft our next five-year strategic plan (2024-2029). The final accreditation report will be a springboard as we craft our next strategic plan, which will serve as a roadmap that keeps Austin Prep moving in the right direction – growing and thriving through unanticipated and ever-changing aspects of 21st century independent education. Predictably, Austin Prep continues to flourish as the institution we always imagined it would be – one that rises to meet the challenge of our times.

Austin Prep Celebrates Black History Month
Check the Cougar Cougar for updates and a schedule for the upcoming week of programming
Austin Prep celebrates Black History Month in February with a series of educational, extracurricular, and schoolwide events organized around the school’s yearlong theme of “Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to the integrity that is in me," and is embedded in our Augustinian heritage and Catholic tradition. The theme was inspired by the Book of Psalms (7:8) and guides us in our yearlong planning across multiple departments.
The Office of Mission and Inclusion draws heavily upon this theme to acknowledge the legacy of St. Augustine. Programming for Black History Month underscores the core value of caritas as it has been expressed throughout the lives of scholars, artists, inventors, politicians, and religious faithful spread throughout the African diaspora. Although we highlight the events planned for Black History Month, our commitment is continuous and not confined to a single month. Rather, our approach is infused with our strategic efforts to augment the core values of veritas, unitas and caritas as expressed by an Augustinian school.
We highlight our ongoing commitment to fostering respect for all people in our celebration of Black History Month. Led by Dr. Bill Driscoll, Dean of Faculty, and Mr. Jaycob Morales, Coordinator of Inclusion and Community Engagement, Austin Prep has planned numerous activities, guest speakers, and presentations for staff and students throughout the month of February to honor the achievements of Black Americans and their contributions to our country and world. In addition to the special activities planned for Black History Month, we look forward to highlighting in various outlets the many year-round components of our curriculum which guide us towards the overarching objective to form graduates who are lifelong learners, passionate global citizens, curious collaborative scholars, and compassionate servants.
