Meet Austin Prep's Executive Chef Bill Carter
Austin Prep celebrated Black History Month in February with a series of educational, extracurricular, and schoolwide events organized around the school’s yearlong theme of “Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to the integrity that is in me," and is embedded in our Augustinian heritage and Catholic tradition. The theme was inspired by the Book of Psalms (7:8) and guides us in our yearlong planning across multiple departments.
The Office of Mission and Inclusion draws heavily upon this theme to acknowledge the legacy of St. Augustine. Programming for Black History Month underscores the core value of caritas as it has been expressed throughout the lives of scholars, artists, inventors, politicians, and religious faithful spread throughout the African diaspora. Although we highlight the events planned for Black History Month, our commitment is continuous and not confined to a single month. Rather, our approach is infused with our strategic efforts to augment the core values of veritas, unitas and caritas as expressed by an Augustinian school.
As we closed out the month, we introduced Bill Carter, Sage Dining Services Executive Chef at Austin Prep to the school community. Mr. Carter joined the Sage Dining team at Austin Prep prior to the start of this academic year. In honor of Black History Month, students enjoyed a meal inspired by Chef Carter. Click here to learn more about the meal, how Chef Carter got involved in the culinary arts, and his role here at Austin Prep.

Students Living our Mission
Check this space monthly as we recognize students demonstrating our values on campus.
Sam LaPlant ‘28 and Victoria Tenreiro '25 have been exemplary members of the Austin Prep community this past month.
Unitas is a key component of what distinguishes an Augustinian education from all others. We continue to look forward to working together to strengthen our community in a way that is reflective of our core values of veritas, unitas, and caritas.
As we do so, the Office of Student Life aims to build students of strong character while recognizing exemplary behavior on campus. Students who best display the values that are distinctive to the Austin Prep experience will be acknowledged monthly here in the Cougar Courier and on social media.
This month, we would like to highlight the work of Sam LaPlant ‘28 and Victoria Tenreiro '25. Sam constantly finds a way to go above what is asked. Whether it is helping to organize classrooms after the bell, or making others feel included after school, his efforts are appreciated and recognized. Victoria embodies our core value of Caritas. A leader on our Cross Country and Track and Field teams, Victoria also displays leadership skills during the school day. When a student was using crutches in the Dining Hall, Victoria helped him with his lunch and assisted him in getting to his table. Their leadership and integrity are qualities we look for in our students. Great job, Sam and Victoria!

Guest Speaker Addresses Holocaust, Kindness, Human Dignity
Tom White of the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College on Wednesday.
Mr. Tom White of the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College visited campus on February 28th to speak to students about a variety of topics related to the Holocaust. Mr. White is recognized as a leader in the field for designing curricula, delivering presentations, and working directly with survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides. He addressed the Juniors and Seniors enrolled in the Examining the Holocaust course to prepare them for their upcoming trip to Auschwitz. He highlighted his visit to key sites that the students will see for themselves firsthand at the museum by explaining that “Your journey to Auschwitz is a process. You will experience a range of emotions because of the power of the experience. You are on this journey together and I advise you to support each other as you experience those emotions.”
Later in the day, Mr. White led a conversation with the 6th & 7th graders on the importance of recognizing the dignity of every human being. His presentation asked students to consider the impact of hate by using examples from the lives of Anne Frank and Martin Luther King (both born in 1929). He challenged them to choose to care about others and build compassion by confronting the past.
In his final presentation of the day, Mr. White met with the 8th Graders in anticipation of their trip to Washington D.C. He used Eli Wiesel’s text, Night, which the 8th graders just began to read, to explore how traumatic memory is held and expressed. Together they traced the life of Elie Wiesel and how the book transforms his experience at Auschwitz into a journey of hope against despair. The power of these presentations nurtured students to build empathy and to embrace our mission to form students with the skills necessary to be global citizens.

Mechanical Engineer Dr. Shannon Stott Speaks to Students
Austin Prep's Scientist Seminar Series continued on Friday, March 8th as we welcomed Dr. Shannon Stott to campus. Dr. Stott, a member of the faculty at the Center for Engineering in Medicine & Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, met with our 9th grade Biology students as well as our AP Biology students. During her presentation she spoke about her journey and how she arrived at a career in medical engineering.
A mechanical engineer, Dr. Stott has been working at the interface of technology, imaging, and medicine, with a broad background in microfluidics, optics, tissue engineering, and cryo-preservation, and a focus on their applications in clinical medicine and cell biology. As a postdoctoral fellow she co-invented the herring-bone circulating tumor cell chip, a device that can successfully capture cancer cells circulating in the blood stream of localized and metastatic cancer patients. Recently, this device has been scaled for large scale production, enabling the distribution of the HBCTC-Chip to multiple cancer centers across the country.
The Stott Laboratory comprises bioengineers and chemists focused on translating technological advances to relevant applications in clinical medicine. Specifically, they are interested in using microfluidics and imaging technologies to create tools that increase understanding of cancer biology and of the metastatic process.
The goal of the Scientist Seminar Series is to build connections between students’ classroom learning and real-world applications by showcasing how scientists from various fields are applying content and skills to explore and understand our world. This series aims to provide students with a broader perspective on the practical implications of their academic studies and inspire them to see the relevance and impact of scientific research.
This academic initiative has been developed over the past year to enhance the student experience in the sciences. We are grateful to the many scientists at esteemed universities and research facilities who have contributed their time and expertise in guiding Austin Prep in creating this experience for our students.

Austin Prep is a community where the faith is taught, lived, and shared. During the week of March 4th seniors from the Teaching the Christian Message class taught Grade 6 students lessons on veritas, unitas, and caritas sharing with these youngest members of the Austin Prep family how these central Augustinian values have informed and shaped their lives, taking to heart St. Augustine's words: The love of knowledge and truth should invite us to continue learning. The love of others should compel us to teach. It was a great opportunity for the youngest and oldest members of out student community to connect in the classroom.
Students Bring Passions to Life in Annual Project

Intoppa '24 Receives Augustinian Scholarship at Villanova
Ava Intoppa '24 is the recipient of the Augustinian High School Scholarship at Villanova.
As an Augustinian school, Austin Prep is part of a much wider Catholic education community, and we work every day in common purpose with our sister Augustinian schools to shape Augustinian hearts that enter the world. Austin Prep is a member of the Augustinian Secondary Education Association (ASEA), which is a commission of the Federation of Augustinians of North America.
The ASEA was founded “to foster unity, efficiency, and continued development within the Augustinian ministry of secondary education.” Each academic year, Austin Prep sends students to participate in the Student Augustinian Values Institute (SAVI) and faculty and staff to participate in the Augustinian Values Institute (AVI). Through these institutes, students and staff deepen their understanding of Augustinian spirituality, Augustinian education, and the heritage of St. Augustine
Austin Prep is one of the ten member schools of ASEA. In addition to the ten Augustinian secondary schools in North America, there are also two Augustinian institutions of higher education: Merrimack College and Villanova University. Both Merrimack College and Villanova University are interested in recruiting students who exemplify the Augustinian values of veritas, unitas, and caritas and have scholarships available to advance that effort.
As was noted in the recent State of the School Message sent by Dr. James Hickey, Head of School, Austin Prep was recently notified that Villanova University has extended to Austin Prep the opportunity to annually select one student in the top 5% of the graduating class to receive the Augustinian High School Scholarship – a full academic scholarship renewable for 4 years. The tuition for Villanova University for the 2024-2025 is $66,838.
Following a careful review by a committee of Austin Prep faculty and school leadership, the committee recommended Ava Intoppa ’24 to Dr. Hickey who nominated her for the Augustinian High School Scholarship. We are pleased to announce that the President of Villanova University, Rev. Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., Ph.D., approved Dr. Hickey’s nomination of Ava. Congratulations to Ava for this outstanding recognition and for exemplifying the Augustinian values of veritas, unitas, and caritas during her seven years as an Austin Prep Lifer.
