Signature Event is Tonight!
We look forward to seeing you at the Andover Country Club
The Signature Event is tonight! The Parents Association looks forward to welcoming those attending this evening’s event at the Andover Country Club.
The annual Signature Event is an evening dedicated to celebrating the Austin Prep Community. While the fundraising component of the event is very important, the night is also the Parents Association’s largest social of the year and this is our biggest event ever. It’s an evening meant for connecting with friends and making new ones.
For those attending, you can start bidding on silent auction items from your phone. Check yesterday's text messages and emails from GiveSmart for directions.
Finally, we send a heartfelt thank you to the Signature Event Committee and volunteers. Without their support, hard work, and creativity this incredibly special night would not be possible.
And don't forget, the winning tuition raffle ticket will be drawn tonight. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket. You do not need to be present to win, but have your phone handy in case you receive a call tonight from Head of School, Dr. James Hickey. This is a call from Dr. Hickey you will want to take!
Next Community Mass is Tomorrow
With the Advent Season upon us, join us for Community Mass in the Chapel of St. Augustine.
Our next monthly Sunday Community Mass will take place tomorrow, December 8th at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Augustine. We encourage our school families who regularly attend Sunday Mass at their local parish to consider joining us for this monthly Sunday Mass. The Mass will give us an opportunity to meet each other and pray together. We will join for a time of fellowship in the Dining Hall after Mass. To help us with our planning, we would ask families to RSVP by clicking here so we can take an appropriate count for the Coffee and Donut Hour.
Students are required to attend with their parents. We look forward to seeing you December 8th as we strengthen each other through this act of celebrating Mass together.
Special Immaculate Conception Mass Monday
Dr. Hickey, his wife Cindy, and their (last of four) Austin Prep children, Charlie '27.
On Monday, December 9th, Austin Prep will welcome Fr. Art Johnson, O.S.A., to campus to celebrate the Mass of the Immaculate Conception. As always for Schoolwide Masses, Chapel Dress is required of all students.
This Mass will be extra special as Dr. James Hickey, Head of School, and his wife, Mrs. Cindy Hickey P’22, ’23, ’24, ’27, will be affiliated to the Order of St. Augustine, Province of St. Thomas of Villanova.
Friars can nominate individuals for affiliation because of their exemplary service to the Order. The community of friars at St. Augustine Church in Andover, including Fr. Art, Fr. Peter Gori, O.S.A., Austin Prep Class of 1970, and Fr. John Dello Russo, O.S.A., where Dr. and Mrs. Hickey are parishioners, nominated them for their commitment to Augustinian education and the Augustinian way of life.
Affiliation is the highest honor that the Order can bestow on a lay person. According to the Constitutions of the Order of St. Augustine, “The Order has the faculty of affiliating to itself the faithful who merit special recognition because of their distinguished cooperation for the good of the Order. By reason of this affiliation, they belong to the Augustinian Family and share in all of the spiritual benefits of the Order.” After their nomination was approved by the Provincial Council in Villanova, PA, the affiliation of Dr. and Mrs. Hickey was approved in Rome by the Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine.
Through her own vocation as an educator and steadfast mom, Cindy Hickey has supported the work of her husband, volunteered countless hours for Austin Prep, and been a quiet source of inspiration for many, especially the staff at St. Augustine School where she worked for many years.
We are grateful for the spiritual bond that the Hickey’s will share with the Augustinians and we look forward to celebrating them on Monday.

Santa Claus with students after the Christmas Tree lighting.
On Thursday the community embraced the festive spirit as Austin Prep celebrated its newest school Christmas tradition – the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Led by prayers read by Fr. Patrick Armano, School Chaplain, and Sr. Maria Gorreth Nassali, Assistant Head of School for Mission and Ministry, and a welcome from Head of School, James Hickey, Ph.D., the community gathered in front of the Dining Hall Patio to witness the magic unfold as we illuminated our magnificent tree. Following the lighting we continued the celebration with hot cocoa and Christmas cookies in the Dining Hall, with an appearance from Santa Claus. It was a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season together in a spirit of unity and joy.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, and for the generous support of Alex and Janine Martinelli P'28, '29 who sponsored the Christmas Tree this year. View photos from the night here.

Baseball Team and Sports Operations Club Welcome Guest Speaker to Campus
Mr. Brett Rudy with members of the Baseball Team and Sports Operations Club.
On Wednesday, Austin Prep welcomed Brett Rudy to campus, who spoke to the Baseball Team and Sports Operations Club about career paths and personal marketing efforts. Mr. Rudy's presentation focused on areas such as building relationships, audiences, and brand awareness, as well as charitable efforts he has spearheaded over his career. While the presentation was marketing focused, concepts could be applied to a wide range of areas including the college application process and networking.
Mr. Rudy with Katarina Burke '27 after the presentation.
Mr. Rudy is a trailblazer in the world of baseball. As the founder of Baseball Is My Life and co-founder of Charity Hop Sports Marketing, he’s dedicated to elevating the sport and supporting the athletes who play it. Mr. Rudy has created successful philanthropic initiatives like Charity Wines and 100 Innings of Baseball for ALS. He’s also the mastermind behind the Corked Bat Collection, Cooperstown Classic at the Baseball Hall of Fame, and Winterball for Toys for Tots. When he’s not working to improve the game, Mr. Rudy can be found playing outfield in the Boston Metro Baseball League, living and breathing the sport he loves, which includes coaching the Austin Prep JV Fall Baseball team.
School Community Demonstrates Caritas This Holiday Season
Austin Prep students delivered 80 Thanksgiving baskets to St. Mary the Assumption Parish in Lawrence.
This Thanksgiving season Austin Prep students and staff assembled and donated over 80 Thanksgiving baskets to families from St. Mary the Assumption Parish in Lawrence, a parish with deep ties to the Augustinian Friars who founded Austin Prep in 1961. Austin Prep collected food and supplies to provide Thanksgiving dinners for 80 families totaling more than $15,000. Students delivered the baskets two days before Thanksgiving.
The Office of Mission and Ministry, in collaboration with the Mission and Inclusion Office, extends heartfelt gratitude for the generous contributions to this year’s Thanksgiving initiative. Your generosity reflects the words of Jesus: “Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me” (Matthew 25:40). Each donation, no matter how small, has made a significant impact on the lives of the families we supported.
The power of community is truly remarkable. Together, we live out the Austin Prep mission and core values, embodying the spirit of unity, love, and truth. As St. Augustine reminds us, “What does love look like? It has the hands to help others.” Your acts of love and service are a testament to the transformative power of giving.
Once again, thank you for your generosity and unwavering commitment to helping others. May God bless you abundantly for the good you do. Advisory groups are already hard at work on Christmas initiatives.

Dr. and Mrs. Hickey Celebrated at Immaculate Conception Mass
On Monday, December 9th, Austin Prep welcomed Fr. Art Johnson, O.S.A., to campus to celebrate the Mass of the Immaculate Conception. This Mass was extra special as Dr. James Hickey, Head of School, and his wife, Mrs. Cindy Hickey P’22, ’23, ’24, ’27, were affiliated to the Order of St. Augustine, Province of St. Thomas of Villanova. Fr. Art's homily, the presentation, and Dr. Hickey's remarks can be viewed above.
It was a milestone event for Austin Prep, and many members of the school community offered congratulatory words to the Hickeys, which you can view above.
Shortly after the Mass, Dr. Hickey sent the following to the School community:
Dear Austin Prep Parents,
|
Today during special mass for our entire community, Austin Prep received a special honor. It was a truly exceptional milestone in the School’s heritage. Last month, my wife, Cindy, and I were affiliated to the Order of St. Augustine at St. Augustine Church in Andover. According to the Constitutions of the Order of St. Augustine, “The Order has the faculty of affiliating to itself the faithful who merit special recognition because of their distinguished cooperation for the good of the Order. By reason of this affiliation, they belong to the Augustinian Family and share in all of the spiritual benefits of the Order.”
Affiliation is the highest honor that the Order can bestow. The affiliation, which was approved by the Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine in Rome, recognized Austin Prep for its commitment to the Augustinian way of life. Although Cindy and I were formally affiliated to the Augustinians, the honor and recognition is not ours. It belongs to the Austin Prep Family, including all the members of the Austin Prep Family who came before us.
On Saturday at the Parents Signature event, I had a conversation with a new parent who told me her daughter came home after school on the Monday after Thanksgiving and said, “someone really cares about Austin Prep” (in reference to the campus being adorned with Christmas decorations). The truth is there are many people across multiple generations who really care about Austin Prep – students, parents, alumni, trustees, former trustees, friars, past parents, and grandparents. And many of them returned to campus this morning to celebrate this special moment and mark the occasion.
Father Arthur Johnson, O.S.A., who was the main celebrant of the mass, literally opened the doors of Austin Prep when our first students arrived on campus in 1963. He has been a consequential part of Austin Prep’s “restless” journey for more than 60 years. No other person in the School’s history can match Father Art’s abiding presence. And to hear him say, on behalf of his Augustinian brothers, how proud and grateful the Friars are of Austin Prep’s unceasing work to advance veritas, unitas, and caritas was unparalleled.
Of special note, Anthony Pimentel P ’99, ’01 GP ’27,’29 was present for the mass. Tony was Chair of the Board of Trustees when I was a candidate for Head of School about 13 years ago when both the Hickey Family and the Austin Prep Family were learning more about each other. Through Tony’s leadership and advocacy, the Board of Trustees, at the time, took a chance on this guy from New York who had a funny accent and supported New York sports teams. Despite all that, the Austin Prep Family welcomed the Hickey Family and, because of a deep and shared commitment to the mission of Austin Prep, the rest was history.
Today was a day of celebration for Austin Prep and to mark this special day when the Austin Prep Family was recognized for promoting the Augustinian way of life, I used Head of School prerogative in two ways. First, I asked Sage Dining to serve a student favorite for lunch today. And secondly, I granted a Head of School Holiday on Friday, December 20 to extend Christmas break by one day. If the students were uncertain about the meaning of today’s events, I suspect a popular menu item and an extra day added to Christmas break helped with messaging. It must have worked since the students erupted with excitement. Chicken tenders and Head of School holidays seem to go well together!
Austin Prep stood tall. The Austin Prep Choir and our 6th Grade Choir were spectacular. In addition, we had a special guest choir of sorts – the Boys Hockey Team stepped up to lead the students and staff in some of the hymns during mass. That moment stood out, for sure. You might even say epic – and I was understandably proud. I suspect St. Augustine was proud as well since he said that when you sing you pray twice.
For seven decades, Austin Prep has endured on a tireless journey with a “restless heart” in the footsteps of St. Augustine. Since the day when the brick and mortar at 101 Willow Street was first set, we have built a sturdy foundation and fortified it with the Augustinian values of veritas, unitas, and caritas. These guiding and timeless values are uncompromising. They are clear and unfailing Catholic markers on a pathway that charts the course from this life to the eternal one.
More than once, Cindy and I have paused in the last week or two to give thanks for the gift of Austin Prep’s Catholic mission, for our Augustinian community which gives it meaning, and our spiritual journey in the footsteps of St. Augustine which helps bring it to fulfillment.
Cindy and I are incredibly grateful to be a part of the Austin Prep Family. And more than ever, we’re all in.
Lessons and Carols Performed Twice for Students, Parents
The Austin Prep community gathered recently for two shows of the annual Christmas tradition of Lessons and Carols, first with a performance for students during the school day on December 4th, followed by a performance for parents of performers in the Chapel of St. Augustine on Monday night. The shows included traditional Christmas hymns and carols by the Austin Prep Choir, the Austin Prep 6th Grade and Middle School Choir, and the Austin Prep Band, as well as scripture readings and short passages about the true meaning of the season. Photos from the Richard J. Meelia '67 Hall show can be viewed here, and photos from the Chapel of St. Augustine show can be viewed here. A video of the 6th Grade and Middle School Choir performing can be viewed by clicking above.

Holocaust Survivor Shares Powerful Story of Resilience
Marcus Villarroel '26 and Nora Hanley '26 interview Kati Preston.
In a deeply moving presentation, Holocaust survivor Kati Preston recently visited our Holocaust Examined class with Ms. Swindell to share her extraordinary life story through her graphic novel Hidden. Students prepared interview questions based on their reading and engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue where Preston transformed historical tragedy into a personal narrative of survival, courage, and hope.
Drawing from her own experiences as a young Jewish girl in Hungary during World War II, Preston illuminated the human experience behind the Holocaust. Her graphic novel, a poignant blend of memoir and visual storytelling, brings to life the challenges of surviving under Nazi persecution.
Students listened intently as Preston described her desperate attempts to remain hidden, the constant fear that defined daily existence, and the remarkable acts of courage that ultimately saved her life. Her graphic novel serves not just as a personal account, but as a critical educational tool, ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten.
Preston's visit was more than a historical academic exercise—it was a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, resilience, and standing up against hatred. Her message resonated deeply, challenging students to become witnesses to history and advocates for understanding.
As Holocaust survivors become fewer with each passing year, presentations like Preston's become increasingly vital. Her graphic novel Hidden stands as a testament to the power of storytelling in preserving memory and promoting human dignity.

Dr. Michael Lescault and Sr. Maria Nassali's Advisory won for the best Upper School Decorated Door.
Last week advisories decked the halls by designing imaginative door decorations for campus. The doors are a fun collaboration and enhance the festive feeling of campus. Oh, there are winners, too. This year's victors for best decorated doors are as follows:
Middle School Winner
Mrs. Galezowski and Mr. Brady
Upper School Winner
Dr. Lescault and Sr. Maria
The results of this year's door decorating contest generated discussion on campus as to what constitutes a "door." We can't wait until Christmas 2025 to see what, if any, rules changes are made, or even enforced...

Austin Prep Students Participate in Catholic TV Mass
Bishop Reed with Kayla Gallagher '25 and Vera Masciarelli '25
On Wednesday, December 11th, seniors in Theology Faculty Dr. Michael Lescault’s Teaching the Christian Message class spent the day at Catholic TV at the invitation of Bishop Robert Reed, an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston and the President of Catholic TV. This semester students have been examining the various ways media can be employed to spread the Gospel, the joyful news of God’s great love, and the trip provided an opportunity to see Catholic media up close.
At the Catholic TV studios, located in Watertown, MA, students participated in the televised Mass for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You can view the Mass here.
The first reading was done by Kayla Gallagher '25, and Vera Masciarelli '25 offered the prayer intentions for the Mass. The class then attended the live broadcast of This is the Day, a talk show hosted by Bishop Reed, and were led on a tour of the various studios and control centers for the network by our host. Our visit concluded with a wonderful lunch provided by Bishop Reed.
Bishop Reed was the celebrant at the Baccalaureate and Commencement Liturgy for the Austin Prep Class of 2021.

Reading Police Drone Unit Visits Austin Prep Robotics Class
Reading Police Department Sergeant Corey Santasky demonstrates the department's drone capabilities for Austin Prep students.
Austin Prep Middle School robotics students recently experienced cutting-edge law enforcement technology through a special demonstration by Sergeant Corey Santasky and Officer Lorrin Taliaferro of the Reading Police Department.
The officers presented their DJI Matrice 30T drone, explaining its vital role in public safety operations including search and rescue, fire response, crime scene mapping, and accident documentation. Students learned about the drone's advanced capabilities, including thermal imaging, laser range finding, and its built-in PA speaker system.
The presentation moved outdoors where students watched the drone in action, providing a real-world demonstration of STEM applications in law enforcement. The Reading Police Department maintains a dedicated drone unit of nine officers, with eight holding FAA 107 Certification.
This visit offered students valuable insight into how their robotics education connects to practical applications in public service, while showcasing technology's growing role in community safety.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
From Sister Maria Gorreth Nassali, Director of Campus Ministry
St. Augustine said, “To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.”
This year, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus, we thank God for the many graces He has bestowed on each one of us that have enabled us to achieve the spiritual, physical, emotional, and intellectual goals of our students.
We pray that the birth of Jesus brings us new hope, healing, and peace where they are needed.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
