Students Attend Harvard Medical School STEM
A group of Austin Prep Upper School students attended a biomedical engineering workshop at Harvard Medical School that bridged multiple STEM fields: robotics, physics, biomedical engineering, and computer science. This intensive full-day program challenged the students to work in collaborative teams to conceptualize and construct surgical robots aimed at advancing current medical technologies.
The experience began with a hands-on patient diagnosis session, where students identified real clinical needs that their robots could address. Drawing on concepts from AP Physics, teams engineered and programmed their robots. In a breakthrough moment, students successfully trained their robots' AI systems to distinguish between healthy and cancerous tissue samples, achieving high accuracy rates in subsequent blind tests. This advancement demonstrated the potential for AI-assisted surgical precision in real clinical settings.
The program culminated in students performing simulated surgical procedures using their newly developed robotic systems, providing practical experience at the intersection of medicine and engineering.

Merrimack College Plays Host to Class of 2025 Retreat
The Senior Class of 2025 at Merrimack College.
Our Class of 2025 senior retreat marked a profound milestone in our students' spiritual journey, beautifully aligning with our school's 2024-2025 theme 'Anchored in Christ, We Venture in Hope.' As our seniors prepare to transition into their next chapter, this retreat offered a meaningful opportunity for vocational discernment and deeper reflection.
Under the guidance of our Augustinian hosts at Merrimack College, Marissa Meyers, Director of Campus Ministry for Spiritual Development, Fr. Dan Madden, O.S.A., and Dr. Joe Kelley, Professor Emeritus and Austin Prep Augustinian Scholar in Residence, our seniors explored their future paths through the lens of our core Augustinian values:
- Veritas (Truth): Encouraging honest self-reflection focused on interiority and listening to God's voice within us
- Unitas (Unity): Fostering a sense of community through small, but powerful deeds of kindness
- Caritas (Love): Emphasizing service and compassion in future endeavors
This retreat exemplifies our commitment to nurturing academic excellence and the spiritual development of our students. By exploring vocations through an Augustinian lens, we're equipping our seniors with the tools to make meaningful life choices. The day culminated with a celebration of Mass with Fr. Ray Dlugos, O.S.A., Vice President of Mission and Ministry at Merrimack College who also serves on the Board of Trustees at Austin Prep.
Most impressively, the retreat was planned, led, and driven by our student retreat leaders, consisting of a team of upperclassmen, trained by Assistant Head of School for Mission and Ministry, Sr. Maria Nassali. We express our gratitude for the partnership with Merrimack College in shaping the future leaders of our community, including providing us with a tour of campus.
As we enter the final months of their high school journey, we'll be celebrating many senior traditions and milestones. Stay tuned for information about upcoming senior events, including their trip to Disney in a few weeks.
Austin Prep Community Spotlight: Mr. Andrew Herlihy
Note: Our vibrant campus comes to life as a result of the talented students and faculty who make up the Austin Prep community. We look forward to periodically highlighting those individuals here in the Cougar Courier.
Hometown: Wilmington, MA
Education/Degrees: Master’s Degree in Teaching and Educational Leadership
Years at Austin Prep: 1st year
Years working in Education: 20th year this year
Department/Area of Subject: Math - pre-algebra/algebra I
Describe a teacher who inspired you growing up: Mrs. Tarpey! She was my third grade teacher and really encouraged me by challenging me in math.
Do you have a motto you teach by? Or an expression you try to instill in your classroom? There are two phrases: “get a little bit better every single day” and “life is all about making mistakes and learning from them”
What’s the most insightful thing a student has ever said to you? “it ain’t about the money, it’s about the experience” This was after they held a lemonade stand and only made like $2 off of it.
If you weren’t a teacher, what career would you have? I would probably be a marine biologist…I was obsessed as a kid and still am in a lot of ways.
Favorite Quote: “It’s the little things in life, that mean the most.”
Fun fact (about you or your past; something colleagues & students might not ordinarily know): I was in a TV commercial for Timberland Boots…it actually paid for grad school!
Any other information you would like to share: I am loving being here at Austin Prep and being part of such a wonderful community!

School Making Great Use of New Conservation Space
Austin Prep is grateful for the new Maillet, Sommes, & Morgan Conservation Land, which opened in early October and is located at 62 Willow Street adjacent to the MBTA commuter rail tracks. The multi-year project was funded through grants like the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Action Grant, congressional earmarks and local funds. The conservation land now boasts a fully accessible walking trail system from the entrance on Willow Street to Lowell Street with additional access located off Hunt Street. Intertwined amongst the thousands of native plants, shrubs and trees are a series of newly created stormwater ponds, designed to improve the quality of stormwater and its runoff by filtering sediments and pollutants through the series of wetlands and marshes now present in the area.
Student groups using the space in recent weeks include Science Faculty Ms. Carly Cavanaugh’s 7th grade life science classes, World Language Faculty Mrs. Linda Filadoro’s Fitness and Fashion club, the Austin Prep Cross Country team, and Science Faculty Mr. Christopher Capone’s AP Environmental Science class.
Check out this space at your earliest convenience!

Latest Edition of Tolle Lege Available Now
Austin Prep's Literary magazine, Tolle Lege, encourages students to develop their talents in the arts and writing, and raise student voices in our school community. Some of the contents include flash fiction, poetry, digital and traditional art and photography, student manifestos, short stories, and even an excerpt from a novel. You can read the 2024 edition of Tolle Lege by clicking here.
Austin Prep's literally magazine is yet another connection to our Augustinian heritage. Austin Prep’s patron, St. Augustine, is remarkable for what he did and extraordinary for what he wrote. If none of his written works had survived, he would still have been a figure to be reckoned with; however, more than five million words of his writings survive, virtually all displaying the strength and sharpness of his mind and some possessing the rare power to attract and hold the attention of readers in both his day and ours. His timeless truths continue to hold contemporary relevance.
A phrase often associated with St. Augustine, Tolle Lege, is Latin for the command “take up and read.” Augustine heard these words during his conversion to Christianity, which inspired him to read the first passage he came across in the Bible.

French Week Highlighted by Trip to Quebec City
Click here to learn more about what students loved about Québec.
The American Association of Teachers of French sponsored the twenty-second annual National French Week from November 6th-12th, and Austin Prep took part. This year’s theme, Le français, langue globale, provided an opportunity to promote Francophone culture and heritage as well as demonstrate all the reasons to learn the language.
As a part of the week, Austin Prep took its first international trip of the 2024-2025 academic year. 40 students and 15 adults visited Québec over the Veterans Day holiday weekend. Click here to learn more about what students loved about Québec. You can view photos from the trip here.
The Québec trip provided students with a rich immersion in French culture and cuisine. The trip itinerary included visits to historical and cultural sites like the Huron-Wendat Museum, the Citadel, and the Montmorency Falls. A favorite stop for many students was the beautiful Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré on the Saint Lawrence River. The students had fun practicing their French vocabulary during a scavenger hunt at the local market and flexed their acting skills at an Improv show and a theatrical workshop. The walking tour of Vieux Québec, the old walled section of the city, gave the group a first-hand view of Québec's rich history.
Truly the trip was a gastronomic experience. Students started each morning with delectable pastries like croissants at Café Paillard or brunch at the iconic Château Frontenac hotel. Meals highlighted the region's culinary specialties, including a traditional indigenous-inspired feast at Restaurant La Traite, savory burgers and poutine at Chez Victor, and a maple syrup-themed dinner complete with music and dance.
The Quebec adventure provided students with a well-rounded immersion in the area's rich heritage and vibrant contemporary culture - and students returned to campus excited to share their tales from the trails with classmates and teachers.

SAVI Students Visit San Diego
Austin Prep Students at SAVI.
Last week Austin Prep sent six Student Augustinian Values Institute (SAVI) delegates to San Diego for an enriching experience at St. Augustine High School. Kayla Onorato '27, Katarina Burke '27, Ava Sherry '27, Jack Daggett '27, Logan McGovern '27, and Logan Elliot '27 joined peers from nine other Augustinian schools, all united by shared values and a deep commitment to Augustinian heritage and spirituality.
Throughout the trip, students immersed themselves in the unique cultures of these schools, forming meaningful and lasting connections with fellow delegates from across the country. Beyond the campus, they explored some of San Diego’s beautiful landmarks, broadening their horizons and deepening their understanding of community and service. Some of the attractions students were able to experience included Balboa Park, Mission Bay Beach, and SeaWorld, where St. Augustine High School held their homecoming dance.
A highlight of the trip was the opportunity to engage in service by serving meals to individuals experiencing homelessness. St. Augustine High School purchased the materials to make sandwiches, which attendees assembled, and then distributed to the homeless around Balboa Park. This hands-on service allowed our students to encounter and support those living on the margins of society, putting their values of compassion and solidarity into action. The experience not only strengthened our students’ connection to the Augustinian community but also inspired them to carry forward the spirit of service and unity.

The breakfast is limited to 20 parents and will run about 45 minutes. RSVP is required. Next Community Mass is December 8th
Join us in the Chapel of St. Augustine for Sunday Community Mass.
Our next monthly Sunday Community Mass will take place Sunday, December 8th at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Augustine. We encourage our school families who regularly attend Sunday Mass at their local parish to consider joining us for this monthly Sunday Mass. The Mass will give us an opportunity to meet each other and pray together. We will join for a time of fellowship in the Dining Hall after Mass. To help us with our planning, we would ask families to RSVP by clicking here so we can take an appropriate count for the Coffee and Donut Hour.
Students are required to attend with their parents. We look forward to seeing you December 8th as we strengthen each other through this act of celebrating Mass together.

Students Attend Annual Race Amity Conference
Aidan O'Neill '26, Joe Carpentieri '27, Grace Ditchfield '26, Amelia Amadin '26, Miles Bhuta '27, and George Mamakos '26. left to right, at the National Center for Race Amity Conference.
Austin Prep students attended the 2024 National Center for Race Amity Conference at UMass Boston. As Augustine inspires us, true unity emerges through the authentic pursuit of truth in community with others - a principle beautifully exemplified at this gathering.
Our students had the privilege of learning from remarkable leaders including author Steve Pemberton (A Chance in the World was our all-school read this summer); Josh Kraft, CEO of the New England Patriots; Laura Herrick, CEO of Wayfarer Foundation, and Joseph Cooper from the New Balance Institute for Innovative Leadership in Sport. These leaders are making a difference in our communities and paving the way for inclusive environments to thrive. Their work resonates with our Augustinian, Catholic commitment to providing engaging student leadership opportunities.
The conference theme of racial amity speaks directly to our Augustinian heritage - the understanding that genuine human flourishing requires us to transcend divisions and recognize our fundamental unity as children of God. We are deeply grateful to our community partners at UMass Boston for creating this space for transformative dialogue.
Juniors Enjoy Class Trip
Members of the Class of 2026 enjoyed a day at Level 99 this week.
The Class of 2026 had a terrific class trip Tuesday to Level 99! It was a great day for juniors to spend time together and create memories with friends and classmates. While it was no trip to Disney World, don't worry Class of 2026, #NextYearWillBeYourYear.
The Office of Student Life looks forward to planning more class based trips as the year progresses.
Journey of the Heart Returns
We are pleased to introduce the next series of Journey of the Heart, our highlight of programs, activities, and initiatives at Austin Prep that exemplify our core values. Journey of the Heart is published on our website, where members of the faculty, staff and students will share their insights. Archived installments are available on our website, as well.
As members of the Class of 2025 departed on their senior class trip to Disney World, Eliza Martin '25 reflected on her Austin Prep Journey, and specifically the leadership opportunities made available to her and her senior classmates. While leadership can be displayed in a variety of ways on campus, in this edition of Journey of the Heart, Eliza reflects on the importance of using these opportunities to lead, inspire, and care for others, while appreciating the journey along the way.
Happy Thanksgiving From Austin Prep
As a reminder, Thanksgiving Break begins Wednesday, November 27th and classes will resume Monday, December 2nd. The Cougar Courier will return on Saturday, December 7th.
During this season of gratitude, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks to each member of our school community—students, families, teachers, staff, and everyone who helps make our school a vibrant and supportive place for learning.
Saying “thank you” and expressing appreciation can truly brighten someone’s day. A simple acknowledgment of someone's service or kindness can lift their spirits and strengthen the bond between us. No one can thrive alone; we all rely on others, and it’s important to take the time to thank those who serve and support us in different ways.
Even Jesus’s life was filled with gratitude to His Father. At the breaking of the bread, He took the bread and gave thanks. If the Son of God took the time to express gratitude, how much more are we called to thank others for their service and care?
Over the next week, and as we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, let’s make an effort to express our gratitude to those around us. Whether it’s a teacher, a classmate, or a member of our staff, a heartfelt “thank you” can go a long way. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the specific ways in which others contribute to our shared success.
Above all, let us not forget to thank our Almighty God, our Creator and Provider, who blesses us with everything we have.
May this season of gratitude create lasting memories, and may we continue to support and appreciate each other throughout the year.
Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for all that you are to our Austin Prep community!
