Senior Tutors Lend Hand to Middle School WritersSixth grade students in Mrs. Leeann Blais' B block English class benefitted from the expertise of Writing Center tutors during their lesson this week. Tutors Jake Taylor '20 and Mia Han '20 joined the class as they crafted their poems inspired by the one and only, Robert Frost. The sixth grade is currently studying poetry by looking at a well-known work, discussing it with their teacher and peers, and then writing their own masterpiece. Jake and Mia jumped right in to chat with students as they began the process of drafting their poems. The Writing Center, located in room 215, is home to a group of tutors (like Jake and Mia) who are happy to join classes during the day, work with writers during Cougar Block, as well as schedule one-on-one help if needed.

History Happened HereEighth graders traveled through time to colonial Massachusetts this week as part of their study of the American Revolution. Students spent Wednesday morning with the Sons of Liberty where they "huzzah-ed" at a town meeting, stormed the tea ships docked at Griffin's Wharf, and dumped "the pernicious tea" into Boston Harbor. On Thursday, another group traveled to Lexington to "muster the Minutemen" as they explored stories from the morning of April 19, 1775. Additional groups will travel to Lexington, Concord, and the Museum of Fine Arts in the weeks ahead to conduct field research as students explore the role of Massachusetts in the American Revolution and the importance of preserving and celebrating our national heritage.

Annual Student Augustinian Values Institute RetreatAustin Prep students departed bright and early Friday morning bound for Tulsa, Oklahoma for the annual Student Augustinian Values Institute (SAVI) trip. The retreat occurs at a different Augustinian high school in the US or Canada each year. Students will spend the weekend meeting other Augustinian students, attending talks and workshops on our shared charisms—veritas, unitas, and caritas—spend time in reflection and prayer, and get a chance to brainstorm projects for bringing back to Austin a renewed enthusiasm for our Augustinian heritage. In the past, students have enjoyed building lasting relationships with students around the country and loved spending time at another high school, getting a glimpse at what life is like for Augustinian students outside of Boston. Pictured above is our SAVI XI delegation: (left to right) Ben Sperling '22, Ariana Clark '21, Drew Nedroscik '22, Yianni Andrikopoulos '23, Lily O’Neill '23, and Alyssa Vounessea '21. The students are accompanied by chaperones and SAVI club moderators Mrs. Leeann Blais and Mrs. Katie Brenninkmeyer.

Reading Police Remind Students How to Stay Safe
At Thursday’s community meeting, we welcomed our School Resource Officers from the Town of Reading to campus. Officers Brian Lewis and Matt Vatcher spoke with students about ALICE protocols. Students watched a video and were reminded that ALICE is not a prescription for how to react, rather it is intended to remind students of options they have should they encounter a situation, with the goal being to evacuate whenever possible. We remain vigilant about the safety of our students and staff and we are appreciative that our SRO's were able to come in and review procedures with our community.

Rock Star Alum Returns to CampusAt Thursday's Community Meeting, Austin Prep welcomed back Britt Denaro '03. A professional guitar player who has traveled the world, Britt, who goes by the stage name Britt Lightning, performed for students and encouraged them to follow their dreams. Britt recalled being a student at Austin Prep when there were little or no arts programs, and told current students they are lucky to have the opportunities they currently enjoy at Austin Prep. She also described some of the challenges she has faced in her career, ranging from having to break through in a male dominated industry, and the process of auditioning for many bands before finding the right opportunity for her. The highlight of the show was when Britt Lightning showed a clip of her performing "Fight Song" on Good Morning America with Rachel Platten. At Austin Prep, she played along live to the clip and was accompanied by many Austin Prep students in the crowd. After the show, Britt had lunch in the dining hall and visited with students in their respective arts classes. "Mentors and teachers shape who you are, and I am grateful for all the support of the faculty and staff at Austin Prep," she said. "Leaders and innovators face rejection all the time but they don't let it stop them from following their dreams. You can really accomplish anything you can think of." The Office of Alumni Relations looks forward to bringing more alumni back to campus to share their experiences and journeys with the whole Austin Prep community.

Dr. Jill Walsh RecapLast Tuesday Austin Prep launched its 2019-2020 Parent University series. Boston University sociology professor Dr. Jill Walsh, an expert in the field of social media use among adolescents, delivered an evening workshop. Parents who attended the session came away from the presentation with a new understanding of the social media landscape and the “digital space” that teens utilize as they work through the central questions of adolescence: “Who am I?” and “How do I fit in?” One parent commented, "She was one of the most empowering speakers. I thought I was going to feel overwhelmed but I left completely energized." Dr. Walsh also shared strategies for engaging in conversation about social media use and potential pitfalls. An executive summary and some additional resources on this topic can be accessed here. |
