Mission and Baseball

As with any coaching position, the best candidate for the Head Baseball Coach at Austin Prep will have the right experience, exceptional gifts, and be mission-aligned. Fortunately, I didn’t need to look very far to identify an extremely talented candidate, whose experience, perspective, and coaching philosophy makes him the perfect man to lead Austin Prep’s Baseball program to the next level.

I am pleased to announce I have appointed Jonathan Pollard ’97 as Austin Prep’s next Head Varsity Baseball Coach.  Coach Pollard’s wide-ranging experience as an athlete, college coach, USA National Team baseball coach, and Director of Athletics is unmatched and distinct.

Jonathan (JP) led Austin Prep’s athletic program to new heights over the last five years and was recently promoted to Assistant Headmaster for Enrollment and Athletics.  A 1997 graduate of Austin Prep, JP went on to play college baseball at Salem State University where he was a two-time all-conference selection. In 2011, JP began coaching for USA Baseball in Cary, NC.  During his time with USA Baseball, JP led national teams around the globe, collecting two silver medals, and a gold medal at the 2015 PanAm Games.  In 2014, JP was named USA Baseball Developmental Coach of the Year.

From 2014-2019, JP served as Austin Prep’s Director of Athletics, and, under his leadership, Austin Prep secured 55 Conference Championships, 5 State Championships, and back-to-back Nason Awards from the Boston Globe in recognition for being the winningest high school Catholic co-ed athletic department in the Commonwealth. In accepting the position, Coach Pollard said to me, “it was privilege to play at Austin Prep, an honor to coach within the program the last 2 years, and to have the opportunity now to lead the great young men in the baseball program is simply a dream come true.”

Logan Bravo, Austin Prep Class of 2018, who is currently a member of Harvard University’ Baseball team and played for JP said “his passion for developing the player, as well as the person, was evident every day he was the AD.  Combining this enthusiasm with his vast knowledge of the game, is extremely exciting for the future of baseball at Austin Prep”.  Peter Burns, also a member of Austin Prep’s Class of 2018 who is playing baseball at Boston College said “I grew up playing for JP and he not only taught me the game of baseball, but what it is to be a man on and off the field.  The Austin Prep baseball program has a bright future ahead of them with JP at the helm.”

In my fifteenth year as a head of school, I have had the opportunity to work with many talented coaches in my career and JP is among the best I ever encountered.  He has been a fixture at Austin Prep for the last ten years as an alumni volunteer, coach, champion of Austin Prep, Director of Athletics, and, now, Assistant Headmaster.  Without question, we are a better community because JP is in it.

JP and his wife, Lindsay, reside in Dracut and are the proud parents of two future Austin Prep alumni – Kane, Austin Prep Class of 2030, and Brooks, Austin Prep Class of 2032.  Please join me in congratulating Coach Pollard on his appointment.
