John Florence Named Head Football Coach

Austin Prep has appointed John Florence as the school’s new Head Football Coach. Florence assumes the helm of the program after serving as the team’s Defensive Coordinator last season and after nearly a decade as Head Football Coach at Lowell High School.

“It was important to find the right fit for our football program and School community, and Coach Florence is just that. He truly cares about the well-being of our student-athletes,” Director of Athletics Patrick Driscoll said. “Over the past year, he has done exceptional work in building relationships with the team. It's a pleasure to have him part of the Austin Prep community.”

Florence takes over for Mike Foley, who served as the Interim Head Football Coach during the recent Fall II football season. Billy Tucker, who was named the Austin Prep Head Football Coach in January 2019, will be pursuing other interests.

“We thank Coach Tucker for his commitment to Austin Prep and those within the football program, and wish him well in his future endeavors,” Driscoll said.

From 2011 to 2019, Florence served as the Head Football Coach at Lowell High School, where he oversaw all aspects of the program including game planning, practice planning, and hiring of staff. Participating in the perennially tough Merrimack Valley Conference, Florence’s tenure included an appearance in the Division I North semifinals in 2013 and a share of the Merrimack Valley Conference Division I title in 2012 with a 9-2 record.

“I’m extremely excited and honored to become the Head Football Coach at Austin Prep. Austin Prep has state of the art facilities and a wonderful campus,” Florence said. “During the Fall II season I was fortunate to meet and coach so many great kids at Austin Prep. I look forward to working with the administration and leadership to develop the culture of the football program and to work with the student-athletes in the program at Austin Prep.”

“The pandemic tested the resiliency of our student-athletes, especially those who participated in the Fall II season,” Dr. James Hickey, Head of School said. “In John Florence, the Austin Prep football program is fortunate to have a football coach who worked side-by-side with our football student-athletes during this challenging year. I am grateful for his leadership, and look forward to watching the program grow during his tenure.”

Florence is currently employed as an Evaluation Team Chair in the Lowell Public Schools, and holds a Massachusetts Teaching License for Special Needs 5-12. He earned a B.S. degree from Bridgewater State College and a M.Ed. from Cambridge College, and has held other coaching positions at Dracut High School and the Groton School.

The Austin Prep Football Team reports to campus August 20 for the first date of practice. Their 2021 campaign opens September 10 at home against Pentucket.
