Despite the unfavorably raw, wet, and breezy conditions on Monday, October 25th, Austin Prep's Max Hampoian '23 rose to the occasion, shooting a 3-under 69 to claim the MIAA Division II state championship at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland. Max finished one stroke ahead of St. Mary's of Lynn golfer Aidan Emmerich and Tyngsborough's Trevor Drew, both of whom finished at 2-under 70. Max's efforts also led the team to a tie for fifth place in the event.
"I played my best golf ever on Monday, and it just happened to be the most important round of my life," Max said. "It was a close finish, and I was paired with the guy (Emmerich) I ended up beating by a stroke. On 18 I hit driver and he hit the ball into the woods, and I was pretty confident at that point."
With the individual title, Max adds to the Hampoian golf legacy at Austin Prep. Max's brother, Nick '18, was the MIAA Division III state individual champion as a junior.
"Joining my brother is awesome," Max said. "He has been giving me a bad time for a while about not having a ring and now I finally have one."
