Sean Ryan Named Austin Prep Boys Basketball Coach

Austin Prep announced today the appointment of Sean Ryan as Austin Prep’s next Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Ryan takes the helm of the program after achieving considerable coaching success at both the high school and NCAA Division I and II levels.

"As with any coaching position at Austin Prep, the best candidate will have the right experience, exceptional gifts, and be mission-aligned. We are fortunate to add an individual who brings a unique balance of these attributes, " Director of Athletics Patrick Driscoll '97 said. "Coach Ryan's experience, appreciation of our School's mission, and passion for developing the student-athlete makes him an excellent choice to lead our Boys Basketball Program."

An Andover native, Coach Ryan comes to Austin Prep from the Burke School, where he served as the head coach from 2014-2023. Most notably, he led the team to three Final Four appearances in the past six years, and was the Boston Globe Coach of the Year in 2020, a year in which the Burke School captured the 2020 Division III State Championship for the first time in school history. Coach Ryan was awarded the Alfreda Harris Award, presented to a top coach in Boston for work on the court and within the community.

Before his time at the Burke School, Coach Ryan held coaching positions at the College of the Holy Cross, Central Connecticut State University, Boston University and at Saint Anselm College.

Prior to his coaching career, Coach Ryan played basketball collegiately at Saint Anselm. During his time in Manchester, he was selected to the USA Bob Cousy Division II team, awarded the Saint Anselm College’s Al Grenert Coaches Award, and inducted into the School's Athletic Hall of Fame. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Ryan will also serve as the Assistant Dean of Students for the Upper School at Austin Prep.

Coach Ryan is enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead the Austin Prep Boys Basketball Program. "I’m honored and excited for the opportunity to lead this program, as we continue to our journey into the NEPSAC. I would like to thank the leadership at Austin Prep, including Head of School Dr. James Hickey, Mr. Jonathan Pollard and Director of Athletics Mr. Patrick Driscoll," Coach Ryan said. "I’m extremely passionate about winning and doing it in the right way, and cannot wait to get to work and help our student -athletes achieve success on and off the court ."

Coach Ryan will enthusiastically continue to develop Austin Prep's student-athletes, which makes him an excellent choice to lead the basketball program as Austin Prep advances into its second NEPSAC season this winter.
