Austin Prep hosted its annual St. Augustine Lecture and welcomed Dr. Joseph Kelley, Professor of Religious and Theological Studies at Merrimack College and most recently, Austin Prep’s Augustine Scholar in Residence, to campus for this community event. You can view photos from the lecture here.
The Lecture Series began in 2015 and is considered one of the signature events to enrich the intellectual life of Austin Prep by introducing students to accomplished individuals who share their lived experiences and life lessons.
Dr. Kelley has worked at Merrimack since 1974 and has had a myriad of roles and responsibilities across campus ministry, academics, student life and development. A widely recognized scholar of St. Augustine, Dr. Kelley has been celebrated for his commitment to generations of students, his colleagues and Merrimack College.
The basis of Dr. Kelley’s lecture focused on St. Augustine’s words “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You,” which are among the most famous religious quotes in the world. Dr. Kelley helped us gain a deeper understanding of the meaning St. Augustine intended when he wrote them. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Kelley fielded questions from a panel of students.
“On the way, but not there yet,” is how Dr. Kelley paraphrased the term that starts every day at Austin Prep. “No one will be a displaced person until we rest in You.”
