The American Experience

The American Experience is a yearlong, project-based humanities program that integrates United States history and literature into a unified course. Through research, documentary filmmaking, discussion, and reflection, students examine how historical events, literary works, and individual voices shape American identity. What Is the American Experience?

The American Experience is a yearlong, dual-credit humanities course that integrates English and United States History into a single, cohesive learning experience for sophomores at Austin Prep. Designed as a CP/H-level course, it challenges students to examine the American story through both historical events and literary works, emphasizing how ideas, institutions, and individual voices shape national identity.

Rather than studying history and literature as separate subjects, students encounter them together. Texts read in English class are intentionally aligned with the historical eras and events studied in history, allowing students to see how culture, conflict, and values are reflected in both fact and fiction. This interdisciplinary structure deepens understanding and encourages students to think critically about how narratives are formed, remembered, and challenged over time.

Rooted in Austin Prep’s Augustinian mission of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas, the American Experience asks students to pursue truth through inquiry, build understanding through shared dialogue, and consider their responsibilities within a broader community. The course moves beyond memorization, inviting students to engage thoughtfully with America’s past and its continued relevance today.

Real-world humanities experiences invite students to explore the American story by integrating history, literature, and lived experience.
