The Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum is a sixth-grade, interdisciplinary capstone experience that transforms the Middle School wing into a student-curated exhibition of ancient Egypt. Through historical research, literary exploration, theological study, design, and presentation, students examine how civilizations are constructed, remembered, and interpreted.

What begins in the classroom culminates in Museum Night, when families and guests move through a walk-through museum designed, built, and presented entirely by students. The project emphasizes inquiry, collaboration, creativity, and communication while inviting students to see themselves not only as learners, but as historians, curators, and storytellers.

What Is the Egyptian Museum?

The Egyptian Museum is a yearlong interdisciplinary initiative for sixth graders at Austin Prep that integrates History, English, and Theology into a unified learning experience. Designed as the capstone of the sixth-grade year, it challenges students to explore ancient Egypt through multiple academic lenses while preparing to share their work with an authentic audience.

Rather than studying ancient civilizations in isolation, students encounter Egypt through coordinated, cross-disciplinary coursework. In History, they investigate archaeological sites and cultural developments. In English, they read Egypt-related literature and create original book videos. In Theology, they examine the Book of Exodus and consider its historical and spiritual intersections with Egyptian society. This integrated structure deepens understanding and encourages students to see how disciplines inform and enrich one another.

Rooted in Austin Prep’s Augustinian mission of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas, the Egyptian Museum asks students to pursue truth through research, build understanding through collaboration, and share knowledge with confidence. The experience moves beyond memorization, inviting students to engage thoughtfully with the ancient world and its continued relevance today.

Learning Through Projects

Project-based learning is the foundation of the Egyptian Museum. Students engage in sustained, interdisciplinary work that requires historical research, literary analysis, creative design, collaboration, and public presentation, mirroring the kind of authentic academic work that extends beyond a traditional classroom assignment.

Instead of progressing through isolated lessons or assessments, students work toward a large-scale exhibition that synthesizes learning from History, English, and Theology. Faculty provide structure, guidance, and feedback, while students take ownership of research, construction, interpretation, and presentation. This approach fosters accountability, persistence, creativity, and intellectual confidence.

Through this process, students step into the role of museum curators and docents, translating research into interactive exhibits and articulating their understanding to an authentic audience.

Museum Night: Building and Presenting the Exhibition

During dedicated build days, classrooms transform into creative studios filled with cardboard, clay, paint, and architectural planning. Students construct scale models of ancient sites, design interpretive materials, and prepare to present their research.

On Museum Night, the Middle School wing becomes a walk-through exhibition space. Students stand beside their projects as docents, proudly wearing “Ask Me About…” badges and inviting visitors into conversation as they explain their research, design decisions, and historical findings to parents, teachers, and guests. QR codes posted throughout the space allow visitors to scan and watch student-created book videos, adding a digital dimension to the physical exhibits.

The experience requires students to articulate their knowledge clearly and confidently. Practice sessions prepare them to answer questions not only from their own families, but from members of the broader Austin Prep community. The result is an academic showcase that blends scholarship with creativity and communication.

The museum has grown over the past decade, expanding in scale and scope as enrollment and project depth have increased. What began as a collaboration between two disciplines has evolved into a hallmark Middle School event and a defining sixth-grade experience. The culmination of this sustained work is Museum Night, when research becomes exhibition.

Research, Faith, and Interdisciplinary Learning

Research in the Egyptian Museum extends beyond textbooks. Students examine archaeological evidence, cultural artifacts, literature, and biblical narratives to develop a more complete and nuanced understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization.

In History, students approach Egypt through the perspective of museum curators and historians, considering how knowledge is preserved, interpreted, and presented. In English, they translate literary analysis into creative multimedia storytelling. In Theology, they explore the Book of Exodus and reflect on its historical and spiritual dimensions, examining how faith traditions intersect with historical realities.

This interdisciplinary structure allows students to encounter the same civilization through multiple academic lenses, reinforcing connections between disciplines and deepening comprehension.

What Students Create

The Egyptian Museum showcases a wide range of student-created exhibits that reflect research, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning. Visitors encounter everything from a wall of hieroglyphic jokes to student-produced book commercials, adding creativity and personality to the galleries. Each exhibit represents weeks of preparation across History, English, and Theology.

Student projects include:

Scale models of ancient Egyptian sites – Detailed recreations of locations such as the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, temple complexes, and the Valley of the Kings, complete with architectural features and researched annotations
Hieroglyphic writing and artifact displays – Original drawings, translated hieroglyphic messages, and curated visual elements designed to mirror authentic museum exhibits
Book videos with QR integration – Creative multimedia presentations based on Egypt-related independent reading, accessible to guests through posted QR codes on Museum Night
Exhibit brochures and docent note cards – Student-written materials that guide visitors through each display and support confident public presentation

While multiple groups may study the same site, no two exhibits look alike. Each project reflects the distinct research, interpretation, and creative choices of the students who designed it.

Student Voice and Reflection
