Alfred Zappala ’68
An attorney, professor, author, and television producer whose wide-ranging career has taken him from Massachusetts classrooms and courtrooms to a new life celebrating his family’s heritage in Sicily.

Building a Career in Education and Law
After graduating from Austin Prep, Alfred Zappala attended Boston College, where he played football until an injury ended his time on the field. He later earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of New England and began a career in education, teaching and coaching at Methuen High School and Fitchburg State University. At age 36, Zappala entered the legal profession. He earned his Juris Doctor from Massachusetts School of Law, where he served as a founding trustee, and established a successful practice in Massachusetts.
Preparing and Mentoring Future Attorneys
Although his legal career flourished, Zappala never left teaching behind. He founded MTS Law Review, a bar-preparation program that has guided thousands of aspiring attorneys, and taught at Suffolk University, Northeastern University, New England School of Law, and the University of Massachusetts. Licensed to practice in Massachusetts, he has been active in several state and regional bar associations. Across the classroom and courtroom, Zappala has built a career centered on sharing knowledge and helping others find their own paths to success.
Returning to His Sicilian Roots
With all four of his grandparents originating from Trecastagni, Sicily, Zappala felt a deep connection to the island long before making it his home. He now lives there with his wife, Eszter, a journalist and television producer, and continues to write and practice law in matters involving Italy and Sicily. Zappala has authored four popular books about the island and is the co-creator and co-executive producer of You, Me and Sicily, a television series highlighting Sicily’s people, culture, and “points of light.” He is also the founder and chairman of The Sicilian Project. A father of three and grandfather of four, Zappala considers his family his greatest accomplishment. His advice to Austin Prep students reflects the practical wisdom that has guided his own life: “Save 10% of earnings, and enjoy the wonders of compound interest.”
