Harvard-Trained Physician Leading ICU Innovation at Brigham and Women’s

Dr. Anthony “Tony” Massaro’s distinguished medical career began with a foundation in Austin Prep’s rigorous science curriculum and values of service. After graduating in 1979, Massaro earned his B.S. at Boston College and went on to Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Boston’s renowned Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), where he now serves as Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. In this leadership role, he guides teams caring for the hospital’s most critically ill patients while helping train the next generation of physicians in one of Harvard’s top teaching hospitals.

Improving Recovery Outcomes Through Research and Clinical Innovation

A nationally respected expert in acute respiratory failure, ventilator management, and sepsis, Dr. Massaro has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for critically ill patients—both in the ICU and after their recovery. His research has focused on optimizing post-acute transitions and implementing evidence-based protocols to improve survival and neurological outcomes, including studies such as Implementation of a Hospital-wide Protocol for Induced Hypothermia Following Successfully Resuscitated Cardiac Arrest. Through administrative leadership, education, and quality improvement initiatives, he has advanced interdisciplinary approaches that elevate standards of care in pulmonary and critical medicine.

Mentoring the Next Generation of Medical Leaders With Purpose

Beyond his clinical and research achievements, Dr. Massaro is a devoted mentor and educator. He frequently engages with medical students and Austin Prep scholars alike, sharing insights into the science and compassion that define modern medicine. He credits Austin Prep’s emphasis on unity and moral integrity for shaping his collaborative approach to healthcare. Respected by peers and patients for his calm leadership and innovation in critical care, Tony Massaro exemplifies the power of curiosity, compassion, and lifelong learning—values that trace back to his earliest days in the Austin Prep science lab.
