Joe Sciacca ’75

As Editor in Chief of the Boston Herald, launched Boston Herald Radio, one of the first digital radio platforms run by a newspaper.

A Career Defined by Integrity and Innovation

Joe Sciacca has been a leading figure in Boston journalism for more than four decades, earning respect as a reporter, columnist, and editor. As Editor in Chief of the Boston Herald, he guided the paper through a transformative era in media while overseeing award-winning coverage of major local and national stories. He also launched Boston Herald Radio, one of the first digital radio stations operated by a newspaper, pioneering the integration of print, audio, and online journalism.

Reflecting on how Austin Prep helped shape his future, Sciacca credits the inspiration and encouragement he found in the classroom. “Austin is a place of possibilities where teachers seek to inspire and motivate. The support and encouragement I received helped me turn my passion for journalism into a career. But more than that, Austin gave me a sense of community and Augustinian values that I have carried with me in every aspect of my life.”

Sciacca is a former Trustee and Austin Prep parent. His son Joe graduated in 2013. In addition to his newsroom leadership, he currently lectures on crisis communication in executive education programs at MIT and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

Champion of Modern Newsrooms

Under Sciacca’s leadership, the Herald became known for its bold storytelling, multimedia innovation, and its commitment to holding power accountable. His vision positioned the newsroom at the forefront of digital transformation, blending traditional reporting with emerging platforms to reach new audiences.

He often thinks back to his earliest days as a student journalist. “As editor of The Legend, I remember racing to meet deadline so that the paper did not become known as The Myth. We always did get the paper out, but at times it was a little too close!”

Mentorship and Continued Impact

Following his newspaper tenure, Sciacca transitioned to television as Enterprise Editor at WHDH 7News Boston, where he continues to mentor journalists and shape investigative reporting. A featured speaker at the school’s 50th Commencement Ceremony, he remains a proud and active member of the Austin Prep community, sharing his experience with students pursuing communications and media careers.

Throughout his distinguished career, Joe Sciacca has embodied journalistic excellence, integrity, and a steadfast belief in the public value of a free and independent press.
