Climbing the Ranks in Sports Media

Mac Cerullo has turned a lifelong passion for sports and storytelling into a prominent journalism career covering Boston’s beloved teams. A member of Austin Prep’s Class of 2008, Cerullo went on to study at the University of Connecticut, where he majored in marketing but focused nearly all of his electives on journalism. He notes that journalism became his primary academic interest very early on, and that foundation helped him enter a rapidly evolving news industry with clarity and purpose.

After graduating from UConn in 2012, he took his first professional job as a reporter with The Daily News of Newburyport, a regional paper on Massachusetts’ North Shore. There, he learned the realities of community journalism, covering local government, breaking news, and high school sports. The experience helped him develop versatility, accuracy under deadline pressure, and an appreciation for the impact of local reporting.

Cerullo soon moved on to The Eagle-Tribune, a larger daily, where he continued to sharpen his writing and earned recognition for his clear, engaging sports coverage. During this time, he also pursued graduate studies at Boston University, strengthening the technical skills and ethical framework essential to quality journalism.

From Local News to the Major Leagues

Cerullo’s persistence and skill steadily opened doors throughout New England sports media. From 2017 to 2021, he served as Sports Editor for The Daily News of Newburyport and also covered the New England Patriots for his company’s network. During that time, he reported on the end of the Tom Brady era, including Super Bowl 53 when the Patriots won their sixth championship. He also guided his newsroom’s coverage of the pandemic’s impact on local sports, chronicling the disruptions and challenges that reshaped high school and community athletics.

In July of 2021, Cerullo was promoted to full-time Red Sox beat writer for The Eagle-Tribune and the CNHI network. The timing proved unforgettable, as his first official day on the beat coincided with the birth of his first child, Anthony. He covered the Red Sox for one and a half seasons with the Tribune before joining the Boston Herald ahead of the 2023 season.

Since then, Cerullo has completed three seasons as one of the Herald’s two Red Sox beat reporters and five seasons covering the team overall. In this highly competitive role, he reports from spring training in Fort Myers, delivers daily coverage from Fenway Park, and tracks the storylines that define one of baseball’s most historic franchises. His byline appears regularly in the Herald sports section, where readers rely on his accurate reporting, clear analysis, and ability to explain both the strategic and human elements of the game. National outlets frequently cite his work, reflecting the authority and insight he brings to Boston baseball coverage.

Blends Deep Reporting with a Passion for Sports Journalism

Across all his roles, Mac Cerullo has remained grounded in the core mission of journalism: to tell stories that inform and inspire. He often reflects on why he writes, citing the reward of changing perspectives and giving a voice to others’ experiences. It’s an outlook that harks back to the values instilled at Austin Prep, where intellectual curiosity and ethical leadership go hand in hand.

Even as he now chronicles high-profile athletes and major sporting events, Cerullo hasn’t forgotten his roots. He has returned to Austin Prep to speak with students interested in media careers, encouraging them to persevere in a challenging industry. He also credits mentors from UConn, BU, and his early newsrooms for guiding him, much as his teachers at Austin did. “I wanted to prove…it’s still possible to do what you love and make a living off it,” Cerullo wrote, underlining a career-long determination to thrive in journalism against the odds.

His success—from local reporter to Boston Herald sportswriter covering the Red Sox—exemplifies how dedication, adaptability, and an Austin Prep foundation can pave the way to a fulfilling, impactful profession in media.
