Leading Global Hunger Policy

Mary Kate Costello has built a career at the forefront of international policy, channeling her political science expertise into the fight against hunger and poverty. As a Senior Policy Analyst and United Nations Representative for The Hunger Project, she led global advocacy efforts with the UN, World Bank, and international coalitions to advance community-led development and women-centered programs. During her tenure, Costello co-chaired the Alliance to End Hunger’s International Working Group (2017–2019) and helped shape global strategies for youth engagement in sustainable development. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to empowering marginalized communities and influencing policy environments that support grassroots change.

Championing Youth and Women Worldwide

Costello’s path has blended academic rigor with hands-on international experience. After earning her B.A. in Political Science from Boston College – including governance studies in Cape Town – she became a fellow with the Alliance for International Youth Development and later directed youth leadership programs in Ghana. These experiences sharpened her ability to navigate complex political challenges with empathy and clarity. Whether drafting UN reports on global ageism or representing civil society at international forums, she is known for building coalitions and amplifying the voices of young people on issues ranging from food security to gender equality. Her analytical strength and passion for service have made her a respected specialist in government affairs and international development.

From Austin Prep to the United Nations

A proud Austin Prep alumna, Costello embodies the school’s values of veritas, unitas, and caritas on the global stage. In 2018, she returned to campus as a National Honor Society induction speaker, encouraging students to use their talents in service of others – just as she has throughout her career. Today, through her work in Washington, D.C. and at the United Nations, Costello continues to model servant leadership. She credits Austin Prep with instilling the sense of responsibility and faith-driven purpose that guide her, whether briefing senators, addressing a Youth Assembly, or mentoring young women aspiring to careers in policy.
