Unitas Leadership Academy
During the 2017-2018 academic year, we piloted an initiative to advance student leadership at Austin Prep. The Unitas Leadership Academy (ULA) was launched to assist students in their study, application, and growth of the complexities of leadership. In partnership with Project Adventure, we developed a curriculum utilizing the framework of outdoor adventure to challenge thinking patterns, problem solve, analyze case studies based on actual events, advance teamwork principles, hone communication skills, and foster a “think tank” of student input for Austin Prep.
Thirty-three students combined from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes met monthly during the academic year either here on campus or at Project Adventure in Beverly. The students who were selected for the program were identified because they stood out in some way as a leader – through service, elected office of a student group, personifying the Augustinian values, modeling exemplary citizenship, and the like. This year, for the second year of the pilot, we will be relying upon faculty and staff to make recommendations.
The short-term goal is for the students in the ULA be our ambassadors on campus. The long-term goal is for students in the ULA to be trailblazers out there in the world, with the mission of Austin Prep guiding their work. We put together a short video about the Unitas Leadership Academy that I think shares some good insights.
