Art and Design

The creators of the impressive video Convocation 2017 are juniors taking a new Independent Study course in video production with Mr. Rob Taylor (Art and Design Faculty). The students all took (and excelled at) Filmmaking as sophomores, and wished to pursue it further. In the course, the students connect with Mr. Taylor to create their assignments, and then independently create their videos. Because the students aren't tied to a specific class-time, they have more flexibility to complete shoots - they've gone out during classes, Cougar Block, and before/after school.

To enable them to work on advanced editing techniques outside of the school’s labs, Ms. Jill Bonina, Director of Technology, provided the students with Adobe Creative Cloud licenses for their home computers. Adobe Creative Cloud is the industry-standard professional software for the audiovisual world, and Adobe Premiere is used by many professional movie and and television studios. For the Convocation video, Dara Syed '19Kate Horgan '19, and James Moro '19 (all as part of the Independent Study) manned cameras, getting comprehensive coverage of the event. James then edited together a quick package for APSMedia's first news show (Austin in Focus), while Dara edited a comprehensive video showcasing highlights from the event. For more videos from APSMedia, click here.

All Upper School students are required to take a one semester course in the Arts during freshman and sophomore years. These courses will help students to develop an understanding of the arts and to gain a base line of knowledge about the theory and history that these subjects encompass. Students will have the opportunity to experiment in the arts to build on the talent that they already possess, to discover a new talent of which they were unaware or to learn to appreciate the value of artistic expression. These courses further help us to accomplish one of the goals in our school Mission which is to provide a curriculum that embraces the totality of the person, including aesthetic talents.
