The Department of English offers four core courses: English I, American Literature, Anglo, Irish and British Literature, and Humanities. Each course is offered on the college preparation and honors levels. These classes are designed to provide students insights into the literary, social and historical forces at work in fiction and nonfiction. Vocabulary development, the formal study of grammar, and standardized test preparation are included. Elective courses include Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, Advancement Placement Composition and Language, Composition (College Preparation and Honors), Creative Writing (Honors), and Yearbook and Journalism (College Preparation).
The Department of English helps students think and write critically and creatively, to communicate clearly and effectively, to work cooperatively, and to be open and respectful of different professional opinions and perspectives. These are the skills needed in high school, college and university, and in the workplace.
