Our goal in the Department of Language is proficiency in both the language and culture of other people, even perhaps at another time in history. Rather than take a smattering of multiple languages, perhaps never achieving mastery of any, Austin students typically study one language and its culture in depth. Our introductory courses in modern languages begin with a communications approach, stressing listening and speaking skills. Upper years present more grammar and an increasing emphasis upon reading and writing skills. Our approach in the ancient languages is one of reading proficiency, with an emphasis upon fluency and historical appreciation. Upper years present more grammar and syntax, with an emphasis upon mastery of the language and analysis of literature.
