St. Augustine Lecture Speaker Inspires Students

Austin Prep continued to celebrate 25 Years of Co-Education during the St. Augustine Lecture, with speaker Grace Cotter Regan, the first female President in Boston College High School’s 150-plus year history.

Mrs. Regan urged students to discover their own vocation in life by thinking about the people they admire and why.

“Think about who you want to be in this world,” Mrs. Regan said. "Think about how you want to start your lives and set some goals."

She also encouraged students to take risks in life, try new things and do not worry about making mistakes.

“I believe that the mistakes that you make - those are the grace moments,” she said.

No matter what your calling, Mrs. Regan said, have a good work ethic, be disciplined, and collaborate with others.

Many students asked Mrs. Regan how she rises to the challenge of being a female President at an all-boys school, and deals with the criticism of those who believe her gender immediately disqualifies her from being a good leader at BC High.

“I never thought about being a woman, I only thought about my qualifications,” she said.

Mrs. Regan relies on her family and the people who inspire her to bring her through tough times, and said everyone needs to develop resilience, a thick skin, and to never let people see you are nervous or bothered by criticism.
