It was an evening of laughter, good memories and a few tears as Austin Prep celebrated the teaching careers of two longtime faculty members, Mrs. Eugenia Georges and Mr. Jay Dowd ’69, who are retiring at the end of the school year.
Close to 250 alumni, parents, students, family members, faculty, administrators and staff members turned out at the Lanam Club in Andover to show their gratitude to Mrs. Georges and Mr. Dowd during a special Retirement Party.
Mrs. Georges taught math at Austin Prep for 20 years, and it was her second career. After helping her husband run his business for many years, she went to college to become a teacher at the same time the youngest of her children was starting college.
Mr. Dowd held several roles at the school in his 45 years - as an English teacher, English Department Chair, and Director of Development for more than 10 years. He is a member of the Class of 1969, returning to Austin Prep after his college graduation to teach.
Mrs. Georges and Mr. Dowd thanked their families, the school and numerous individuals for supporting them as teachers over the years. They are also grateful to all the well-wishers and people who donated to the school’s Austin Scholars Program - Inner-City Scholarship Fund in their names.
Headmaster James Hickey, Ph.D. P’22, ’23, ’24 thanked both for their years of dedicated service.
“When it comes to teachers who go above and beyond, the students are always telling me about Mrs. Georges and Mr. Dowd,” Dr. Hickey said. “Your love for your students is reflected in their love for you both. Austin Prep is grateful for your exceptional service and unwavering commitment to generations of students.”
